aluminum tag in the cowl area
« on: April 10, 2010, 10:05:50 PM »
I was doing some work on a 68 mustang coupe several months ago and had to remove the upper cowl to replace the caps and had to repair the center of the lower cowl and an area of the firewall because some jerk had a chevy motor in it. When I cleaned out the seam sealer where the 3 layers of the cowl and firewaal go together the was a piece of aluminum in there towards the passenger side. it was about the size of a motor id tag but thinner like the tags underneath the seat that are hogringed to the base. not really paying alot of attention to it at the time I ending up destroying it to get to the neede rapir area. It did have some numbers on it but was partially melted where it was caught in a couple spot welds. Any ideas on this?

Don't recall seeing any on the cars I've seen

Get a picture?

On some earlier cars a small thin flap can be seen sandwiched in the cowl pinchweld and sometimes punched with a number but haven't (that I recall) seen any that late

I've seen the aluminum "tab" on Metuchen and Dearborn cars.  It can be found 2 ways... first is still intact, possibly with some punches through it, like buck tags.  Second way is to see a raw edge, where it was torn off.  Not sure what the significance of the tab was, but it is interesting to see one.

Charles - have you seen them on the later (after 65-66)  cars?

Definitely 65-66, but no later examples come to mind.
