K code heads?
« on: December 16, 2019, 11:57:27 AM »
I am in the process of buying a K code Fastback -66.
I know the block and heads have been exchanged but seller claims they are K code stuff.
Can't check the block code but it is said to be -67... as are the heads.
The heads do not show any sign of 18, 19 or 20 castings, so are they by any chance later service heads?

Would really like to be able to post more codes and dates but unfortunately the car is in storage at a farm.

Thanks,
Claes

Pull the valve covers and look at the casting ID. I would not buy a K code without doing that. If the dates are wrong it hurts the value of the car. If the parts are really what he says they have value as trading material or to sell and help defray the cost of correct parts. It's your money, check everything before you buy anything.

A simpler method is to check the head casting numbers located on the LH end of the head. It will be 19, 20 or 21. Those are the only known 64-67 HP head casting numbers.
See below, the red arrow.
The yellow arrow points to the engine assembly date.

Good information so far. Yes you had the wrong casting numbers for the exterior castings - if you want you can remove the valve covers and check to see that the valve springs have the cast retainers but the exterior number castings work out pretty well as long as they are not faked.  Of course there are allot of things to check on a claimed K code and any missing parts will mean more cost to find and replace those parts. This can run from maybe $500- over $2000 a piece.

As stated even if the parts have been replaced with others your going to want to also focus on date codes to see if the replacements would be from another acceptable source. Of course its also about how much your paying, the intended final product and how close to original your aiming for. Good luck

Not sure why you can't check the block code and the date. Each are indicator and the process is as much about what should be seen/found and what isn't found or discovered. Both equally important

FYI later service 67 hipo heads tend to all have the screw in ports near the exhaust ports for thermactor tubes.

Thanks for good responses so far!
Reason for not being able to check the codes is that the car is stored inconveniently... dark, tight etc... and a bit far from where both me and seller are...

But as I understand, even the service heads would have the 18, 19 or 20 casting, right?

Even if the heads are 1968 302-4V heads they have value. Same goes for the block and the transmission and the rear end. OK so it's stored inconveniently - not your problem. You are the buyer. It is the responsibility of the seller to provide either pictures of what you are buying or provide an opportunity for you to inspect it. If that means taking the car out in the sunlight then so much the better because who would buy a Mustang without inspecting the underside of the body for rust?

@ Bob or Jeff:
Do the service heads also have the 18, 19 or 20 casting on the outside?

If yes, I would know that these heads are not Hipo...

I know what to look for under the valve covers, just would like to have a response to the question above - then I can decide on how to go on with investigations.

Thanks!
Claes

ps car is mint condition and I have no problem buying it... but, as you have said - difference in price if not correct hipo parts  ds

First its not 18, 19 or 20 -  it's 19, 20 or 21 or another way to say it 19 through 21.

The C8ZE service heads I have pictures of do not have a number cast on the extensions so not all service heads have the numbers. Aug 67 C7 Hipo heads I have pictures have the numbering on the extensions. Left over C7 heads would have been placed in the service replacement (dealer parts) system during 67 K code production and right after it.

If it is a hipo block, the VIN will be stamped on the RF edge of the oil pan rail. Might be for another car?
