Media Blast Stencil for FoMoCo Script Headlights
« on: April 23, 2020, 02:53:26 PM »
I'm offering a stencil specifically made to handle the rigors of media blasting and blast in the FoMoCo script and words onto your headlights. The stencil is made via a photographic type process so the details are great, IMHO.

See this reference:
http://anghelrestorations.com/uploads/3/5/1/2/35122002/headlights_v1.0.pdf

I made one set of stencils for GE and another for Tung Sol.

The cost? Simply donate $10 to this site for 2 or $20 for 4:
http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?action=treasury

I have a limited run of these as I did these for my use. However, I had to do two sheets to meet manufacturing minimums.
View the How-To here:

Be SURE to read the comments included with each picture (the square, cartoon balloon icon) and the included instructions.

PM me here with headlight type and I'll mail you 3 or 5 stencils -- one for practice on a spare non-stock headlight -- that you apply to your headlight and media blast in the script.

Note: This process will not allow you do an acid etch as there is a light carrier film over the stencil.

Thanks Bill, very nice!

I'd be interested in a version to use with etching cream.

GE style is sold out.
Still have many of the TS style.

If I get enough requests I could make another run of the GEs. so PM me with your request and if I get enough requests I'll do it.

I just ordered another set of photoresist media so I will again be able to offer GE headlight masks.
Let me know via PM if you need any. Tung Sol is still in stock.

I'm testing out my newly created masks for Carlite windows. Since these are date coded they would be specific to your car -- it's bespoke!
Windshield, side glass or rear glass are all different so each is a different mask. Sun-X requires yet another style mask. This might affect the price as it would be higher than the "one-size-fits-all" headlight masks. I might consider offering a reasonably priced polish kit to remove the old Carlite and date if there is enough demand.

Both processes require low pressure media blast so keep this in mind. The windows would need to be out of the car!
I have enough to do without investigating acid etch, so please don't ask.

Will they work with etching cream?  The stencils I used in the past were done with etching cream and turned out great.

I knew Charles would ask!

No. If you've ever worked with custom vinyl lettering and such there is a carrier film that holds all of the elements together. After you squeegee the whole thing on, you remove the carrier.
In this case the carrier doesn't come off and the act of sandblasting removes the film.

I've found that getting the stainless trim off of windows is the best way to polish them.
While they are off you should polish the window too.
Cover the window and just lightly blast the area.

There are also small hand held media blasters that recycle their own media.

But you have me curious and I wonder if the film could be removed otherwise. I'll test that out.

Etching cream is very easy to use and no mess/worry about media blasting.  The stencils I've had were vinyl.

We have the special cutting blades for doing micro-cutting of vinyl. I haven't tested them yet.
But it's actually the weeding process that gets onerous.
Very small tools are required to remove the excess and you have to use a magnifier.
While it's possible to do one or two it's really pissy work.

Oh, the company that makes the photo paper doesn't sell the "open" style for etching anymore.

The photo paper I use does not have a release. It can't be removed by peeling it off.

I was going to offer these using acid etch but Bob Gaines warned me that the glass is not standard glass. My testing proved this to be true as no etch I have made much of a mark. The glass appears to be similar to early Pyrex.
I did get some results keeping it on overnight. But, I don't think the media can tolerate it.

If you don't have a media blaster, find someone in the club who does.
