Although titled as a 68 GT Door speaker thread, the thread has encompassed both 67 and 68 due to their similarity.

I don't have a horse in this race, but I am curious. My documentation is too far away right now, but this topic came up in the Shelby forum and it got me to thinking.

I love enumerated lists, so for 67 factory options only:
No radio -- blank radio bezel (not a blanking plate, but the entire chrome housing).
No radio -- console car -- don't believe this was possible, but just a guess as I've never seen a blank radio console bezel.
AM radio -- output to dash speaker
AM/FM -- output to dash speaker as FM is monaural
AM/8 Track -- AM to dash speaker only?; 8 track to door speaker

I'd love to see ruppstang's picture as his previous post has a missing link to the  picture.

TRUE. With Console required factory installed radio option of some sort.
WITH Factory AM/8-Track, the AM radio plays on door speakers, both 68 AND 67

Interesting.
I've never owned a Mustang with anything other than AM. Then again, the sound is bad enough I just listen to the engine!

Off topic -- same for 66 AM/8 track, I assume?

Still like to see a pic of a factory door speaker hole in the metal. For extra credit, a speaker grill on a non-deluxe (no grill) door. I've seen this grill many years ago, but thought it would add to the discussion and jog my memory.

Thanks for the dealer installation instructions.
According to those, if the dealer added speakers they also added the lower grill to act as speaker grills.
So you can spot a dealer add-on by them using standard (sheet metal) screws to affix the grill. The dealer would not take the time to make square holes for the factory square plastic "nuts".

Don't know that that would be an 100% correct statement. ;) Not sure that all factory installed speakers were installed using the nylon/plastic inserts.

Jeff you are correct. Our 11-04-66 67 GTA has it's grills attached with screws with out the nylon insets. I think some of the latter 67s and all of the 68s had the inserts.

I’ve seen early 67 cars with square punched holes. I’ll have to dig through pictures

Just to keep records as accurate as possible where was that car built?

Great, more weird 67 stuff.
Wonder if the use of screws directly into the door and not into the square inserts for the grill installation was a specific factory thing and not just early/late?

If I read the Electrical Assy Manual right, the factory speaker hole is rectangular, just like ruppstang's install picture and it appears the speakers mount from the rear and have built in nuts. The Assy Manual only shows the speaker and "8 screws and washers" for the pair.

FWIW, my 11/2/66 actual build date San Jose example has just 2-square holes on it's date-correct door (8 13 W2). The GRILLE mounting holes are all directly into the sheet metal, same with the door-mounted courtesy lamp (directly into the sheet metal) but the two with the nylon inserts are the two that secure the door-mounted courtesy lamp LENS to the door.

OK I found:

1. 7F02C129xxx scheduled Dec 03 which has square punched holes only for the courtesy lamp lens, the remainder as direct mount screw holes (like Richard's car)
2. 7F03S134xxx scheduled Dec 16 square holes all around
3. 7R01C127xxx unknown dates square punched holes only for the courtesy lamp lens
5. 7R02C156xxx scheduled Dec 20 (actual Dec 15) square holes all around (my car)
6. 7R01S197xxx scheduled Mar 11 square holes all around
7. 7T01C144xxx scheduled Nov 09 square holes all around
8. 7T02K215xxx can't see the holes but this is an example of AM 8-track, non-interior décor, with long interior décor style long door grille.  The lighting is poor but I can't see any evidence of a courtesy lamp lens.  Interior door color is black, so I would say that the black paint behind the grille hides it well.  On a light colored interior they would have to black it out in some manner.
9. 7T02S216xxx scheduled Mar 17 (actual Mar 15) square holes all around
10. 7T02A260xxx scheduled Jun 05 square holes all around

Finding cars with interiors torn apart with pictures of the door - not easy.  Finding interior décor cars - more difficult.  Finding standard interior with AM 8-track torn apart - priceless?

Since we have drifted from the subject line, perhaps this should be a different thread - another chasing of 67 running changes.

Great find of the square cut factory speaker hole!

For completeness, my 67 SJ Deluxe Interior Shelby (see sig) with no speakers in door has 8 square cut holes.

John, you picture of the Parchment Interior car looks the same as mine.

I thought to post a picture but thought against it too since I ovalled out the speaker hole to clear the edge of my RetroSound Door Speakers, did not wish to mislead anyone thinking that was how the factory did it. I intend to use my Coupe as a Driver so my factory AM/8-Track has been upgraded internally, the stock OE speakers would no longer be correct with the extra wattage output of the upgrade. FWIW, it will still play 8-tracks too but is also capable of much, much more than that... through Bluetooth wirelessly or the 3mm input jack. Joe (Joe's Classic) did a really nice job for me.

Will have to find time to go through my pictures also

Also will see if I can pick and choose my way through the current 4 pages back to reply #10 in 2011  ::) and pick out posts that can make up a 67 focused thread. Sure the discussion line will look a bit odd but it will separate the two. Good example why more recently we try and split early or remind members to stay on thread or start a new one ;)
