Fold Down Rear Panel Trim
« on: May 28, 2022, 10:33:51 PM »
Question came up else where about when was the rear panel rear edge trim (visible from the trunk mostly) not installed any longer and replaced by wrapping the carpet over the back edge of the large panel at the rear edge in the trunk. This is a detail related to only those fastbacks ordered with the fold down rear seat option

Looking through the pictures the change took place between 67 and 68 production and carried on through 70

To illustrate

67

68

A closer look and comparison for the trap door lock to rear panel area of both - 67 on left. Yes the lock and retaining hardware different are different from one another.

As it should :)

Not sure why they switched. Doesn't really seem to be a time or money saver

I had assumed it was another post-strike cost cutting measure.  A survey should tell.  I did see that the MPC lists the part as applicable all the way through the 70 model year.

Are you reporting or suggesting that early 68's had the feature??  Have multiple unrestored Sept 67 built  68's with the wrapped carpet on that panel

Not at all, just reporting "something I read on the internet" which seemed reasonable based on other changes.  We all know how that can go.  Based on what you reported, you have narrowed it down, which puts the strike change theory on the outs.

I was lead to believe that it was a late 67 change as a cost saver and my July 67 FB has the carpet and not the trim.

Where was your car built and is is unrestored? Guess and or hoping that the July date is from the Marti report.

Just asking so that it can be compared and others examples looked for

Thanks

Hi Jeff, apologies for not providing that information first. The car build date (as per the original door data plate) was 12 July 1967 at the SJ Plant. The car has since been restored but it was in the same configuration before restoration.

Thanks will look through what I have and as well invite others to post late examples. So many of my pictures are from non fold down cars or striped cars
