Quarter Panel Ornaments
« on: June 18, 2011, 08:59:23 PM »
Concerning the ornaments (or maybe also called trim) that appear in the quarters right behind the doors on 67/68 mustangs:

(1) What was used to seal them to the body? Was a gasket used and if so where are they sold (I'm not finding them)? OR, was ribbon seal used, similar to that used between the front fenders and the aprons?

(2) What type of nut is used to hold them to the body? Are they the "acorn" type nuts that are used for other ford emblems? Is there a mastic sealer gasket between the nut and the body? If someone has a picture that would help a lot.

I'm still looking. Does anyone at all have a source for NOS or a part number for AMK fasteners associated with the quarter panel ornaments? I cannot find any such hardware listed in AMK or NPD's catalogs.

These used a PAL-style Nut, if you are familiar with those. No Acorn nuts for these.

67 Quarters had the Fake Grille Vents.

68 Quarter had the Chrome Rib with Body Colored Bezel.

I hope this helps, Andrew

The gaskets are available from most any parts vendor.

They basically cut a very course thread onto the aluminum post.  I have not seen these reproduced by AMK.  However you may try something like this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#flange-speed-nuts  Sorry I cant help on the correct size.

I probably have at least a thousand of them(literally) I will see what I can do about finding the correct sized Originals. We save every Nut, Bolt, Screw Clip, etc. off of Original Cars.  Andrew

On '68's what I've seen is the chrome trim is attached to the base with a rectangular spring nut.  Not shown in the FAM.  The assembly is held to the body with Ford part 374566.  Self threading Hex flange nut - 5/32" thread, .563" OD, 11/32" hex head, .290" thick w/sealer.  AMK part WL, kit B-12974, 10 pcs.  or kit F-3928, Quarter Panel ornaments.

'67 FAM calls out 372444 nuts, again self threading hex flange, 1/4" thread, 1.00" OD, 7/16" hex head, .375 thk w/sealer. AMK part OAA (similar), kit B-10641, 6 pcs (so you need 2 to get the 8 required).  Or kit F-3947, Quarter panel ornaments.
