Anyone out there knowledable on Torino's?
« on: September 08, 2011, 06:52:18 PM »
I know there are some very knowledgeable people on here when it comes to Mustangs, so I thought what the heck I'd ask here and see if anyone knows.  I've asked on other forums but no one seems to know.

I'm looking at an original '70 J engine code car that's optioned a little strange with an A code rear end which I understand is an open 3:50 gear rear end. Since it's a 429CJ car shouldn't the rear carrier still be a nodular type even though it's not a traction lock differential, or am I wrong? The carrier that's in it is not marked with the big "N" on it.

Formerly 69 Mach 1 428SCJ w/ 4:30 gears, 69 GT 500 convertible #0018, 69 Boss 429 KK1599, 67 GT500 #0784, and a few others

First not all nodular third members have/had the big N

Have had a few J and C code 71 Torino's and Rancheros over the years but don't remember what they had as (visually) third members but would think they would follow the same pattern in Mustangs with those engines. What month build is the car? I will check out my C code 71 Cougar when I go to the shop this week and report back

I also have a 1970 C code Torino Cobra Automatic that also has an "A" code open rear thats original to the car. Its just a standard 9" not nodular.
1966 Mustang Hipo Coupe, in the family since new (unrestored)

Thanks for your replies guys.

Jeff I thought that all nodular rear ends after sometime in the early 69 model year had the "N" marking.  Is this wrong?  How do you identify a nodular rear end as being nodular if doesn't have the "N" marking?

The Torino in question was built 11/12/69 in San Jose.
