Package Tray Replacement, OE vs. Reproduction 65 to 68?
« on: July 26, 2014, 09:37:01 AM »
My original package tray was cut for speakers and needs replaced. I ordered the replacement Fiber Board (NPD 2014 pg. 44,  #46656-1a) and first one arrived damaged. (scratched/scraped when packaging it I believe) They sent another in BETTER condition, but also showing some handling issues. When compared to the Original, the patterning of the panel is off, I think quite noticably. I painted it this morning (black) first with a gloss and the scratches seemed to magnify themselves, so I switched to a semi-gloss satin finish.

I am somewhat dissapointed in the finish on this. Mostly, the scratches/scrapes in the board itself, but also the pattern being off.

Has anybody had better luck with another supplier/product? This didn't cost enough to worry about the money end, I just wish it looked better than this when painted.

NOS isn't too terrible to find, you can dye it any color.  The repro are quite a bit off in this area.

I found a sheet of 1/8 hardboard with the correct pattern and cut my own.
Pretty easy.

Can someone post pictures of an original?  I'd like to see the difference.
Too much junk, too little time.

This package tray, with speaker holes, is from a 66 SJ car.  The upper piece of  ' tempered 1/4" Masonite ' is from Home Depot and is about 10-15 years old.  The textures are different the masonite appears as a diamond pattern and the OE as a tighter woven pattern.  Brian
