67 NJ Sport Sprint Engine Detail Questions
« on: January 21, 2024, 11:25:01 AM »
Restoring a 67 coupe, NJ car, 289-2V Sport Sprint, C4, non-AC car, manual steering and manual brakes. Does someone have pictures of their 289 Sport Sprint engine detailing? Wonder what is painted blue and painted black. And, how the air cleaner assembly looks.

Thank you!

It is the same as standard air cleaner but with a chromed lid. I will see if I can find a picture.

67 NJ Sport Sprint Engine Detail Questions

Can we get an idea of when your car was completed at NJ? This is often important when we get to details. Thanks

Found this thread focusing on the air cleaner. Note that the pictures include examples that have been repainted so don't use them as a guide for those purposes

https://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=15808.msg99029#msg99029

Don't remember if there is an example in the Unrestored Picture Thread but easy for you to check  ;)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here is a start try to get some information posted to help out

Engine would be painted as usual. Long block with valve covers, intake, spacer, carb (bagged) oil pan w/plug, timing cover, oil filter (already painted did not get fully painted in the painting of the engine , thermostat housing, bypass hose and clamps, water pump, exhaust manifolds, engine plate (thin steel plate between the engine and transmission, flywheel as well as almost all attaching hardware Ford Corporate Blue. Exhaust manifolds were typically not fully painted and typically left a paint shadow behind them on the upper engine block and valve cover gaskets and not all retaining bolts were installed before painting the engine.
Think that is all of the items but may have skipped over something  ::)

Harmonic balancer, coil, Pulleys -Semi-gloss black

Coil bracket would have been P&O

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As far as examples I suggest you seek out original unrestored examples rather than restored ones since just about all will have something finished wrong or out of place. Just happens The vast majority of the details on a non-Sport Sprint will apply to your car so don't turn a blind eye those that resource and opportunities. Also consider that all of the details one the engine as shipped (no air cleaner, most hoses and such are all the same no matter where the car was built since they all came from the same engine plant for your engine size

A decent example of a almost complete engine can be found by searching for  - 17,000,000 Engine at Cleveland Engine Plant

Will post, hopefully, more than a half dozen pictures that should help.

Don't forget the Sports Sprint decal instead of the 289 one.

As promised a few pictures. Since you didn't respond back yet didn't focus on a production period.

Since the thread I posted a link to focused on the air cleaner figured we didn't need a bunch of them. For you and or others does show the typical location and orientation of the service sticker on the drivers side shock tower found a many of the examples from that plant and year but you would need to double check when your car was built and compare it to be certain. Wrong distributor advance unit and an odd after market AC unit was installed at some point in the past.

As for other details here are more. Take note of the notes since many of the pictures include things that have been changed so want to call out some of those so you don't get mislead

Some other C codes

Rear of intake area. Note the brass and vacuum lines and connections were not painted

Front intake area. Ignore the choke air tub and covering someone tossed on top of the intake  ::) Note that engine ID tag and retaining bolt were not painted with the engine

From a very nice unrestored A code which would share all the same painting details as a C code. Happens to be a NJ car also

Hope these help
