S2MS-9424A intake
« on: April 25, 2023, 12:23:07 PM »
Hi,
I just bought this COBRA intake. The man has had it on his shelf since early 80's. The quick internet research I was able to do before I decided to buy it, made me shink that it is the "real deal". The "OECO" marking on the bottom would indicate it is an Offenhouser made, over the counter piece?

What do you think?

Thanks!

Yes based on the pictures it is the real deal . There are more then one version that was used during 66 GT350 production. They were all different from each other.  The picture shows one of the early style versions with the non cropped "A" . The later versions had a portion of the "A" leg cropped off for more distributor clearance.

Agree its likely a production/assembly line piece. Nice find

Lots of little differences in the intake manifolds during 66 production. The one you purchased was not used for a very long period of time before changes were made

Thank You, Bob and Jeff!

I will probably use it on my 66 K-code GT... what carburator would have been used? The normal 600 cfm Autolite or a larger Holley?

Depends on when the Shelby was built and with what transmission. Autolite for most automatic cars and the 715 Holley for four speeds. If purchased across the counter and added to a Mustangs then you got the Holley

Well, I've got a K-code/auto so I guess I'll start with the Autolite, Thanks!

You should be looking for a FOMOCO, C6ZF-9510-F, with "6Z F" stamped on the LH front mounting pad. Be prepared for sticker shock. In the interim, try almost any 1.12 carb from a 390.

If it matters, beware of common carburetors restamped and or restamped with a reproduction assembly tag added.

Since your adding this to a Mustang with a K code and if the intake was purchased across the counter not a a "Cobra Kit" then they would have likely just used the original carb. You may have issues with the base and vacuum leaks so you will likely be looking for a spacer if using the Autolite

Not sure how exact your building the car but you could always find this intake a new home and buy a nice new reproduction

Some options and choices.

Yes, some kind of thin solid (not a part with large hollow spaces included) spacer / adapter is required when using a Ford 4100/4100-A carburetor on an original COBRA high rise intake manifold. To work correctly, a number of the cavities in the carburetor's base must be sealed from vacuum leaks. It is important to have an appropriate base gasket under the carburetor to fit around throttle bores correctly. Many complaints users have with these carburetors develop from not as good of base flange seal as Ford intended.

Engines with PCV routed to the rear of the COBRA high rise intake.

Ford had a pretty good selection of thin engineered material carburetor spacers for 4V applications but unfortunately now most are very rare or have pass holes (four large holes in a spacer under throttle bores) too small for a 1.12 size Ford 4100/4100-A carburetor.

The Ford B9AZ-9A589-A part made of a phenolic material 0.02" thick with 1.60" pass holes is a good choice for factory COBRA intake 1965-67 and a Ford 4100-A carburetor in the 1.12 size.

The Ford B7A-9603-D part is similar but 0.50? thick with 1.50? pass holes. Any good machine shop would be capable of enlarging the four 1.50? holes to 1.60? holes.

I have seen modern aftermarket spacers that look similar to these mentioned above, but I do not know who makes them or any measurements of them.

Engines customized with PCV routed to the rear of a carburetor spacer.

Ford made several versions of spacers that fit this category also. If one wants to plumb the PCV system to go under the carburetor, a 1969-70 Boss 302 spacer is a great way to go. I install them with tube at the rear.

Hejsan Classe,
Nice find in Sweden, as regards 66 Shelbys all automatic cars from #801 had the 595cfm Autolite carbs.
If I were you I would put the Autolite on a 66 HiPo Mustang. Don't you already have one on your HiPo.

The rare early S2MS intake with the full "A" typically (easily  ;) )trades hands for 1500-2000.00 . By comparison a recently released repro version of  the most common S2MS 66 Cobra intake by Scott Drake is virtually identical . Unlike other repro Cobra intakes it is authentic looking in all visible details once installed and sells for 400-500.00 . Given the OP's car did not come with the intake originally and since the repro looks for all practical purposes the same as what could be bought over the counter back in the day. The difference in dollars could be used to finance a hipo carb or other needed parts on the car. I think Karma would be in the OP's favor if the rare early intake typically seen on early 66 GT350's after #252 was able to find it's way back on the right GT350.  It only makes good financial sense along with good Karma. Just a thought .
