Wanted 289 hipo exhaust manifolds
« on: March 15, 2016, 02:15:20 PM »
I am looking for a set of hipo exhaust manifolds for my k code. I would prefer originals ones since the reproduction ones have some fitment issues. My question is how to tell originals for the reproduction ones?

Thanks,
Rick

Originals have date codes under the part number. Some repos do not have a date. Scott Drake makes one that does however the date font size is incorrect on the SD. There a couple pictures of originals in this site if you search for "hipo exhaust". When you find them, compare to the SD version and it will be obvious.

I have to loosen my originals to insert number 4 and number 8 plugs.

Thanks for the info. I see what you mean about the SD date code. I'm looking at a set on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/331803089551?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT. They look to be original but from 1964 if I'm reading the code right. I have a mid year 1966.

I did too Jim, but then someone suggested using a cheap, thin socket/wrench made for lawnmower engines which I have and it seems to work fine w/o loosening my manifolds.....

There are not too many 13/16 hex lawnmower sparkplugs so the "el cheapo" sockets are also in short supply. I frequented swap meets and flee markets looking and hoping for one. Everyone wants "quality" so the cheap, thin wall sockets are rare.
