5th Gen Aluminum Hoods
« on: August 13, 2020, 10:52:57 AM »
Our 5th Generation Mustangs came with stamped aluminum hoods from the assembly plant.

My '08 is seeing some minor corrosion and peeling paint on the hood underside around the edge seams.

What's been your experience, including any Ford warranty repairs?

My 08 Mustang GT and 08 Taurus X, both with aluminum hoods, have paint failing at the leading edge.  I don't know of any company that would warranty this on 12 going on 13 year old model cars, let alone with over 130k miles in my case.

Come to think of it, my 67 GTA was at 13 years old when I bought it from the original owner.  That looked like it went through the ringer multiple times compared to my 08!

Agree, a little late in the game for any warranty coverage.  My '08 has almost 150k miles.  I met a '10 owner the other day, who said she'd been round and round with Ford about this when the car was still relatively new (2012-2013).  While the local Ford agency tried to help, the warranty claims were denied at the corporate level.

Guess the only thing to do is monitor the corrosion spots and try to repair if it gets too bad.  A good body shop should be able to do the work.

I'm wondering how the aluminum Ford truck bodies are holding up.

My wife's 05 has the same issue. When I first noticed it I started researching the issue and I found it is very common thru several model years. Ford said the aluminum hoods got contaminated with steel shavings and they did warranty these hoods for a while (until they realized the scope of the problem) but then they started denying claims. So fat we are just living with it since it hasn't gotten any worse.
