Title: What's the one thing that took forever to get right?
Post by: Skyway65 on April 10, 2013, 02:36:52 PM
We all have had a small project that, for whatever reason, turns into a big hassle.  These interior panels have taken me forever to get right.  I finally got them done this past weekend.  There's a lot of work to get these correct!  (Notice all the empty bottles nearby... ::) ) What other projects, that should have been easy, took you forever to get right?

Most any project that seems like it will be easy turns into a nightmare!

I still haven't got this one right: painting the air cleaner lid.  I can lay down three coats of primer, two light coats of color, but the third coat of color always fails.

Well you know that is a hard one to narrow down to just one.  I seems like everything I do on these cars takes at least three tries to get it right.  Brian

For me I can't think of a small project but the toughest thing was getting all the sheetmetal installed with the correct gaps prior to painting and mostly afterwards.  From the door to fenders, valances, hoods, headlamp doors, etc. I would have it done one day then look at it the next day and say I can get it a little better. I must have tweaked everything everyday for a week. I even put a dent in a completed fender pushing it in. Thank goodness for a great PDR guy that I had. Would never know it was there.

Fitting the kick panels on my car kicked my butt.  And installing the Deluxe/Pony interior carpet and trim on the kick panels was no treat either.

+1 Same experience  :(  Seems the easiest (get it done in a couple of hours) can quickly turn ugly.  At least I never/ very rarely get the rust surprises ;)

Installing any other exhaust than a Scott Fuller one.

Part of the problem is folks like us pay attention to details that a lot of others may not.  The most frustrating moments during a restoration are usually when reproduction parts are used.  If you quantify the additional time it takes to get repro parts to fit right, it's easy to justify paying for NOS or super nice original parts!

I could say the one thing that took forever to get right, was my wife, but that's a whole different topic.....

back to mustang issues.

Complete door glass alignment on my 66 convertible soMe years ago.  once I worked out there was other factors contributing to my head-ache and what I had to do to over come it. It became a combination of repo glass, worn mechanism, repo door skins and a twisted windscreen pillar

Now that I know the correct process and what adjustment does what. I now fell more comfortable and secure in doing it on the next project.

Ok Gary, So what's your secret to doing the rear panels??   Do tell.  I have to do (4) of these within the next few months.  Any big tips???

Is it getting the middle part straight first, or Drinking lots of Miller light and Dos Equis while you're doing it????!????????????????  :o)

E-mail me at NEFaurora@aol.com to chat about the panels.. I have quite a few questions!  They came out beautiful!  Tony K.

Thanks!

These posts have made my day, I thought I was the only that ended up doing things twice and sometimes a third.  The only thing I know for sure is the weather in North Dakota is a bummer.  I just got done snow blowing out the drive way.  The snow at times was up over the top of the snow blower. :-[

Feel your pain.... 82 here to day with a little breeze.... lawn and plants are growing like mad, so got to mow and prune plants once a week.

Ate the first of the strawberry crop this morning though tomatoes aren't ripe yet ;)

That hurts, the way things have been going here I may not need to break out the mower.

82? It was 72 in Stockton today, and you ain't that far away. And I will have to mow for the first time this year, can't wait to do that. Strawberries? You may have planted them within the last week or two but they are green. I'm getting tomatoes (cherry) tomorrow and most likely will plant them before the day is out.

There you go believing the weather reports/mass media again... ok it was 78 and 82 yesterday here at the house.  :)

Nope would post a picture but ate em-- second year for that group of three different varieties just short of 80 plants. Figure I can get three years out of them right now each has over 60 berries. Added another 2 dozen 45 days ago this time Alpines

Ones let to ripen
