1964 1/2 - 1966 Tire Question
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:28:19 AM »
Charles I have a 1966 mustang convertible that I show in concours trailered class. I am hearing that MCA is concidering changing the tire rule to require original brand tire, not just type. I run red line tires so, what would be the original tire brand for this car?? Thanks

The change is not a definite yet, but could be coming.

U.S. Royal would have been the OEM tire brand for dual red lines in 65-66.

Remember that this is a weighted scale so the brand would make up only a small percentage (if everything else is correct) of the total points in the category.  In this way someone with missing only one component still gets the majority of points while the person getting all the details correct gets rewarded ;)

In Pensacola, I noticed the original low mileage Vintage Burgundy fastback (w/ the dealer Cobra badge and dual carb upgrade) had the correct non-pie crust dual redlines in Goodyear.  OK, I will assume that his tires were not factory original and were bought sometime in the 60's-70's.  Either way, they are more correct than the repop US Royals available today.  The new repop US Royal dual redlines have the same incorrect 'pie crust' edge as the BFGs, and Firestones already being produced.  If the US Royals were being produced correctly, (without the pie crust edges) I would consider the rule change fair.
I know, I know, it's only two points....just my thoughts.

I heard that Coker was interested in the original US Royal molds for the dual Reds, I guess they make the BFGs & Firestones at present.
If someone had the current US Royal repros and the change was made in judging would THEY be acceptable?
