Thank you all for your feedback!
I'll definitely be leaving the data plate alone...

I would advise leaving the paint color itself alone as well-I don't know if I've ever seen a '67 in Burnt Amber code V before...it seems kinda rare....any pictures?   Soooooo many "dark blue" cars out there anyway....

Here are a couple of shots of my car as it was being hauled to the body shop back in June.  It's not that Burnt Amber is a particularly bad color - it's just not one of my favorite '67 Mustang colors.  Also, with the amount of sheet metal that has already been replaced (note the "lovely" Springtime Yellow fenders and hood) or will be replaced (the quarter panels, taillight panel, and front & rear valances), I don't feel too bad about changing the color - as there won't be much left of the car that originally painted Burnt Amber anyway...

Burnt amber is a beautiful color, and it is rarely seen.

Doesn't seem like they are quite so rare up here in the Pacific Northwest - I've seen at least 4 or 5 Burnt Amber '67's at recent shows (and I owned a Burnt Amber fastback back in the 80's as well)...

PS - Interesting back story about your fastback!

I really like that color!! I think you should reconsider. what was the original interior color?

Was Burnt Amber a '67 only color? I really don't think I've seen one here on the east coast.

It is not a common color but would not consider it rare. There were 18,708  67 Mustangs produced in Burnt Amber. Dusk Rose would be considered rare with only 2,395 produced. The most common color was Lime Gold with 73,760 produced. We are a bit off topic, sorry. Marty

Back to the original post... as many of these cars get parts added, a scenario...

65 or 66, K code, no door tag, appears to be a GT.  Unable to tell what the original color was, as a PO gutted, stripped/blasted it for restoration it, and lost interest....for whatever reason.

Car needs a door tag, but no way to really tell what should be on it... owner does their best to make an honest  determination, and makes a tag to match the car as it will be restored.

Wants to show car as "original"...  not as "I don't know"...  how would it be judged?

There are not many options on a case like that with no Marti report available. It is a whole different deal on a car where you know all the facts.

From an MCA concours-judging perspective, the car simply is judged as presented.  It's not up to the judges to determine how a car came originally.

This was the scenario I was in.  My '65 coupe had a '65 convertible drivers door tag on it when I bought it.  So in the interest of having a correct door tag I had Marti Auto make me a door tag to match my car.  The only guesses were date, DSO, and trim.

Nothing wrong with that. It was the best you could do. That is a lot different than having a lime gold car and painting it red then changing the tag to save points at a show.

New here to this site, this is my first post here! Not being a MCA judge I agree, what purpose does it serve to change the data plate? More important why change the color, Burnt Amber is a rare color and it looks so dang good!
