Rebuild kit for Borg-Warner T-10 HEK-AD
« on: November 08, 2023, 05:01:18 PM »
I have a 1966 coupe? that were sold new in Stockholm, Sweden in July 1966. I?m about to buy a T-10 HEK-AD and as I understand this is a one year only gear box and I?m trying to find the correct rebuild kit, but haven?t had any success so far.

Is there anyone that could help me find one or should I go for a Toploader instead?

I buy rebuild kits for the T10 from-The Gear Box. When you order a kit it asks you what make and year you want. The 1966 Ford kit is different than the 1965 kit. A simple way to verify that you have a 1966 transmission is to count the splines on the output shaft 1966 is 28 spline and 1965 and older are 25 spline. I also order the cluster gear pin and the reverse idler shaft. They are not part of the kit but are commonly worn. You are correct that the 1966 transmission is a one year only transmission and most parts from an earlier transmission will not interchange.

Be advised that Ford had to revert to T-10 transmissions in later 1966 because of demand for 4 speeds. Keep what you got and "fix" it (T-10 4 speeds were known for popping out of 2nd gear because of bad syncroes. That "quirk" was why my 64 Fairlane 289HP didn't finish "well" at the Connecticut Dragway).

I imagine finding a 4 speed transmission in Sweden for an older Mustang would be difficult. The T10 is a good transmission and was used by all of the major manufacturers of the time period. Yes they are known for popping out of gear when the transmission gets worn out but a pair of new Torque Lock Sliders will eliminate the problem. Of course the Toploader is the toughest transmission but the T10 will do just fine if it is rebuilt correctly.

Quite difficult, but not impossible. There were a few Mustangs shipped to Sweden in 65 and 66, could have been 500 cars per year. My parents bought a new Honey Gold 1965 coupe early in 1966.

When it comes to parts, the biggest problem is the distance to the US. The shipping cost, customs and tax are heavy costs and nearly doubles the cost before it is in my garage. But we manage. And again thank you for the advice.
