Applying quarter trim upholstery on convertible
« on: May 07, 2024, 06:12:33 PM »
I am about to recover the quarter trim panels for my 1964.5 convertible.  Has anyone done this and have tips.  Conceptually seems easy but am afraid the reality will be tricky.

First place to start is getting the sewn seam lined up on the panel straight, work the sides and then the top/bottom last.  Usually was not any glue applied originally to the face of the panel, all on the back side.

For the ash tray opening, cut an X pattern and fold the 4 ears under.

Observe the original cover if you still have it to see how the corners and curves were trimmed to even out wrinkles.

A heat gun would also be good to use for stretching.

I added "deluxe interior" trim to the quarter my 66 daily driver Hardtop which I assume is similar. The first thing that went on was a 1/2 inch of foam, then the "hide of the South American Nauga". I should have started at the front an worked back to the seat. That's about the best I can say. I "covered" my mistakes (about 1/8 inch too short) by pulling the Naugahyde very taught and the use of excessive amounts of weatherstrip adhesive.

A bunch of spring clamps like these.  https://www.homedepot.com/p/Anvil-2-in-Spring-Clamp-99691/302755764

I wrap it all around.  Fold over the edges.  Put all the clamps in place.  Go around and make the slits as needed in the corners.
Then undo a couple of clamps at a time and glue that area.  Do small sections as you move around.  As stated, glue only goes on the backside.  Leave the clamps in place until the glue is good and dry.

dave6768, this is very helpful.  Your panels look excellent!  What adhesive did you use?

Thank you,

Corey
