Gents,
Looking at a 66 GT350 photograph and this was found on the rear tail light panel. This District Code of 290, what does it mean to you guys?

No the "290" in this case was this cars second rotation number. Would repeat after 999 cars on each assembly line at San Jose that year. Just kept track of the car and body in the second half of production. Had nothing to do with the VIN and was not limited to Shelby's or even Mustangs. Haven't seen it on a NJ car in that location in the past.
Plenty of threads discussing the application and importance of these in other threads
Though you didn't ask the DSO was a notation (in this example) to the rear of the car to identify the body as being part of a large special order. Not in number of cars built that day but reminded that the assembly was guided by additional paperwork/order than just what was on the buildsheet. Ford used "DSO" number of different applications/purposes and decoded the acronym different depending on the usage.

'DSO' in that location on a San Jose car would typically would refer to 'Domestic Special Order'
