Depends on the backing plate manufacturer.  Usually we see plain or hatched pattern on K/H plates and the raised numbers on Bendix.

BTW, this is not necessarily Shelby-specific.

Originally the plugs would not have been installed normally. Some cars may have had issues prior to delivery and had the metal plugs knocked out and replaced by the rubber plugs. There is a TSB relating to this plus a small number of original cars *Mustangs and Shelbys still have the metal knock outs after 50 years. Because of the TSB article Ford provided a ton of rubber plug to the service center and I would bet that they didn't care what plug got in what backing plate when they first were serviced a year or more later.

So is this just a Shelby thing? late 65-66 thing? or does the knock-out carry on past 66?

So any concours car from 64 1/2 - (70?) would have the knockouts intact?

The list grows ...

I have seen a knock out intact on a number of 66 cars but have not seen them intact on 67 and later.

+1 ...but I do not see cars with low mileage and untouched as often as most of you all do. This is why I asked. I did not notice any signs of the tang that would have held these on my backing plates for my regular 67 Mustang, it had one-each backing plate (Kelsey and Bendix)

Not something I've seen on 65's either.

Do we know if Bendix and K/H both produced backing plates with the metal knock-outs?

Guess you didn't read the link I posted above. At least to the start date Ford was pretty clear. Have not found any reference from Ford or when and if they stopped following this practice. Do recall (as many of my friends have also) knocking these out of hundreds of cars in the late 60's into the 70's as we worked on cars of all makes and types - either our cars or in my case while adjusting brakes at garages in my youth

Since the two companies that supplied the backing plates also did the same for the other car makers through those years its likely that they had the same practices and design that they carries across the product lines. Maybe we should be looking for the remaindures of the plates rather than the current presence of them for evidence and clues

I was on my cell (at car shows!) and didn't follow the link

I do remember working on cars of this era when I worked at various independent repair shops in the mid 70s. I remember having to knock out the metal plugs and using rubber.
But since we worked on all makes it's impossible for me to remember the details of which car.

The rear axle of my car is still covered in dust and grease and sitting in the corner. Attempts to view the knockout produced a nice pic on the pumpkin side of things, but the drum side of the backing plate that should have the knockout tang remnant was still covered in crap.

Bill,67-70 Shelby with a knock out would have points deducted in a concours venue because no evidence suggests that it was typical for one to be intact when it was delivered to the first customer. 66 is a different story. I hope that answers your question.
