Spare Tire
« on: December 26, 2019, 07:40:47 PM »
Could any 68 Shelby come equipped with a collapsible spare tire?
If yes, would it be in the Marti/Build? Could a January 68 GT350 have one?

I'd like to see a 68 Shelby list of standard and optional features to round out my knowledge, which is lacking on this year!

It would would be by mistake that a 68 Shelby regardless of GT 350 or GT 500 would come equipped from the factory with a collapsible spare given it was not standard or a typical option available for 68 Shelby.

As you can see in the sales addendum the collapsible spare was not available for any Mustang after December 1967.

No for space savers on 1968 Shelbys. Yes, Kevin knows which cars had the option. If I recall the number of space savers was less than 50 in all 1968 Mustangs. None made it into Shelbys

I laugh at all the advertisements that say “optional” equipment on 1968 Shelbys.

Here are your choices: bodystyle, engine (model), exterior color, interior color (limited) transmission, ac or not ac

Everything else was standardized or mandatory; power steering, power brakes, tilt, rear axle ratio, ram air on KRs, fold down seat on fastbacks, power tops on convertible with glass, full sized spare ;-), hubcaps, AM radio ( with very few exceptions ) , intakes and carbs, smog...

I have almost no pictures of 68 trunks.
I do have a few reference materials that show the list of items on or available on 68 Shelbys. I'm not so trusting on reference materials outside of Ford's.
But I came across a 68 Hertz car with one in the trunk. The date on the wheel was close to the car's and also close to the "no longer an option" date.

Thanks for the data points!

If you came across a photo of a collapsible spare in a Hertz Shelby's trunk it does not in any way mean it came from the factory that way. Get the Marti report on the car in question if you have any doubt. As Pete says, it didn't happen. And thank goodness for that! A real spare is a lot better.
