Manual Shifter Rebuild - 1968 Mustang 390 and others
« on: July 31, 2023, 03:26:07 AM »
Just rebuilding my shifter and I am wondering which of these pins gets removed or both to take the shifter housing apart. I did a search on youtube and all the rebuild videos did not take the shifter shaft apart.

Thanks

Remove the round pin and the U shaped bracket will come off and the shaft will slide off.

The pin is really stuck in there. I tried to bang it out but it does not move. Also tried a press. Also for some reason I am not able top open the attachment

The round pin on these appears to have grown onto the shaft on the few of these I've done.
We are talking building thick plate metal supports on either side of the aluminum saddle and hitting the pin with a drift and a 2 1/2 pound hammer tight.

I am working on it. does not really appear to be built with servicing in mind!

No, you went to the dealer and bought another one.

The whole thing can be plated together.  The steel spacer on the end can be removed.

Good point. Why didn't I think of that!

I was discussing that with Bill. Perhaps that is the best way to go about it

Interestingly the only rebuild kits I could find are for the handle where it mounts to the shifter. Not like a Hurst! All the shims/spacers etc

After discussing with Boss Bill I opted to zinc plate the shifter housing assembled instead of messing with the pin any longer. The pin won!
