Title: Early Dearborn 64 1/2 Underbody Paint
Post by: DM_1964 on February 18, 2015, 03:54:35 AM
I'm getting closer to painting process so I have a question regarding Dearborn underbody paint color, in particular for an early (March) production 64 1/2
I've searched other topics where my question has been vaguely answered with the color being "From just about black, to green to blue and to gray depending on the time period" quote from Jeff S

So my direct question is do I try and mix up a special color to mimic a batch color?
I'm unsure whether to paint prodominately black (hence a March build date), but how black comparing to the engine bay black?

You can't go wrong with black on an early car, just make sure it's not deep black and has a bit of a gray.  Should have a shine to it also, no flat primers were used.

Thanks Charles, that clarifies it perfectly.
You wouldn't happen to have a pic of your recent Pace Car handy that I could reference?

Will have to check.  That car went together so fast, not many pics were taken.

Just seems like yesterday I said I was getting ready for paint, that was back in Feb.

Anyway it's not too far off, spent today preparing the underneath I started to clean the tunnel, no rust, or road grime there, just a little dusty. I was happy to see a consistent black.

My question is, is this close enough or exactly the same as the engine bay black?

Off what I've found I'm hoping to use the same for both, saving some time and budget.

Hard to tell from just the pictures and nothing to compare it to. On the last dark batch color car I spent allot of time with it looked back until I laid a freshly shot test panel (in black) next to it.

Suggest that you do the same. Grab a small panel (have even used the nail plates from the lubber yard) and paint it with your engine compartment black then compare. Believe you will find that even of the color is very close the amount of gloss will be different

Let us know what you find
