Title: Where exactly does the mirror remote control get installed on a 66 door panel
Post by: Mstg66 on July 11, 2015, 06:24:02 AM
Hi everyone, hope someone out there can help me. I have a 66 and I am upgrading the interior to the pony interior. I have bought the rotunda side mirrors and I need to install the  left hand side remote on the inside but I don't know where exactly to cut the hole out of the inside door panel trim.
Could someone give me some measurements from the edge on the door trim to the edge of the remote and also the bottom of the door trim to the under side edge off the remote. It would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

+1 There should be a knock out plug on the back side of the panel.

I believe I still have my old panel. I can get some measurements for you next week.

The remote mirror control cable need to come thru an opening in the door sheet metal. If you dry fit the door panel you will see where the hole in the panel needs to be, and there should be a knock-out on the inner side. The 65 installation uses two nut-clips, the 66 installation uses two holes drilled into the door sheet metal. Cover the area where you think the hole in the door panel will be cut with masking tape and make some marks with a pencil of the control bezel: center; upper and lower edges; front and rear edges. Cover the hole in the sheet metal with more masking tape, dry fit the panel (use 4 panel clips), punch a hole with a sharp awl or ice pick in the center of the panel to see where how the two match up and adjust your center. The rest should be straight forward.

Another trick is to screw in a sharp screw from the backside of the screw hole, then dry-fit the door panel.  The points of the screws will make a witness mark on the back of the door panel, allowing you to determine where to make cuts.

I've used this trick on repro kick panels that don't have all of the screw holes pre-drilled.  Works really well!
