Are there any know VIN mistakes coding a convertible as a coupe? Thanks Greg

What plant?
Welcome to the site :) You'll find that we're pretty specific 'round here. Helps keep the threads and responses focused rather than mixing information that does not relate to details that do relate to a specific question

Could be possibly a conversion someone did to make a coupe a convertible....Isn't there a process to make coupes into fastbacks now?

I once owned a 1966 Mustang convertible that came out of the San Jose plant. I got the car from the original owner. The engine in the car and the warranty tag on the door showed it to be a six cylinder (engine code T). The VIN stamped in the car aprons indicated that it was a (engine code C) 289 2 V. The Virginia title showed the VIN # as a six cylinder. The factories did make mistakes.

Thx for the responses. It is a Dearborn car. It appears to be an original convertible. Aprons also seem original too. Are there any other VIN numbers on the frame or body panels?

Welcome to the site. There are three "permanent" VIN locations under the hood, the visible one on the LH side apron; and two, one on each fender, both hidden by the fenders on the top of the apron close to the forward edge of the hood hinges. The VIN on the door data plate can be missing or replaced by the door replacement and if present, is "reliable" if it matches - maybe. There is a screwed on (sometimes spot welded) Buck Tag on Metuchen cars with the VIN. The VIN is obviously on the registration, but if you are lucky, you might find the original warranty card usually in the glove box, or a window sticker, or an invoice. I've seen a few mistakes made on VINs, so it happens. The engine VIN applies to "K" code HP cars only for your year. That's all that there is.

Might want to check to see if the car has been "clipped" Compare the date codes on the front sheet metal to the rear sheet metal..
At least a place to start.
