Title: urgent information needed 66 Gt instrument cluster and glove box lid
Post by: austr6 on September 25, 2015, 02:49:12 AM
Please help...... I'm in urgent need of clarification regarding the dash on 66 GT fastback with standard interior.
can someone please tell me if ALL 1966  GT Mustangs only came with the " Moustache" style instrument cluster and glove box lid??
I'm looking at a supposed genuine 1966 GT Fastback but it has the standard looking facia (however, it is a five gauge instrument cluster).
Just need to know for certain as Im new to mustangs and not sure if some GT Mustangs had the standard style dash ?? I really appreciate a speedy reply
Thanks so much in advance.

Not all 1966 Mustang GT came with the Moustache face. The standard interior Mustangs received the same face plate as any 1966 Mustang. The Moustache was used with Deluxe Interior (Pony Interior) only in 1966.

+1

See this for more items to look at....dash details are explained as well. http://www.mustangdreams.com/verify-1965-1966-mustang-gt.htm

There are many other things not listed in that link that can help determine a factory GT but that is a good start.

Also bare in mind that it is much easier to fake a '66 GT than a '65 GT (especially since you don't have to modify the dash on a '66 to accept a GT style instrument cluster on a standard interior car).  If you are lucky enough to be looking at a Metuchen built car it will (or should have had from the factory) have a buck tag which will identify the car as a factory GT.  The buck tag will have "PIO" stamped on it (performance image option) which denotes a GT.

NOTE:  If it's a "A" code car check for the existence of the crush tubes in the rear frame rail for support the factory dual exhaust.  All "A" code cars came from the factory with single exhaust unless they were GTs.

Good Luck!

Regards,

Ron
