Title: 1967 GTA 390 Idler Arm
Post by: travnemi on November 24, 2015, 12:13:14 AM
I have a 1967 GTA 390 Dec 1966 San Jose Build with power steering. The steering linkage is bad (all the rubber looks like it's been rotted for years). Can it be rebuilt or where a good replacement can be bought?

Thanks,

Travis

the one you have is not original to the car and is not worth being rebuilt. Chokostang sells a nice aftermarket alternative that looks better then the average auto parts store part . Expect to pay 250-300.00 for a rebuilt original typically.PM me if interested in a genuine rebuilt/restored one.

Bob,

That's strange, I have also have another 1967 390 with automatic transmission non GT from San Jose built in Sept. 1966 and it has the exact same idler arm. Whats the correct one that should be on there?

Thanks for your help

The idler arm is the weakest link in the system ,so it commonly gets replaced and is most likely the explanation for both of yours being the same. I don't have access to my pictures at the moment but maybe others. Basically it has the the shaft going down through the cross arm with a retaining nut on the bottom side not on the top as in the picture. The shaft is stacked so that the nut is locked and not a castle nut and cotter pin as in the picture.

Thats a common aftermarket replacement idler arm.  I have a stack of them I have replaced sitting on the side of the shop...free to anyone who wants them.

I have a picture of an original on my webpage here...just scroll down:
