Title: 67-68 big block A/T accelerator pedal
Post by: WT8095 on January 17, 2016, 11:13:50 PM
Does anyone have some better photos of the big block A/T accelerator pedal assembly for '67-'68? In particular I'd like to see the kickdown lever, to make sure I know what to look for when I go "shopping". (I'm making my junkyard shopping list for springtime, which is only 6 months away!) Per the '68 chassis AM & 428cobrajet.org (where this photo came from), the lever should be outside the pivot bracket, as opposed to inside as was the case on small blocks.

As the pic shows the only difference is the kickdown sits outside the bracket.  I think I have one on the shelf and will take some pics...

...

Just looked, only have C4s, must have sold the C6.  IIRC the only difference was the kickdown location, I looked at them and don't recall any significant differences other than that, but don't have side by side pics or detailed measurements...  hard to access the one on the 68 S/C6... not much room in there....

Thanks for checking! Yes, it's crowded under the hood. Even just a photo or description of how the kickdown arm is welded to the shaft would be helpful. In case I run across any that might have been converted or modified by previous owners.

Excellent, thank you! The photo will probably help lots of other folks too - hard to find pics of this detail.

Not quite the "only" difference but it certainly is an easy way to identify one from another. Notice how the big block also leans towards the steering column differently than the small block one does (looks to lean away from the steering column). You cannot simply cut the welds off and "Move it over" to adapt a small block to a big block application (or vise-versa)

That's the sort of detail I was hoping to find out, to avoid buying one that someone else had hacked. Also looks like the big block arm might be a tiny big longer than the small block, unless that's just the camera angle.

Thanks to everyone's help, I was able to locate a nice used one online for a decent price. It's been cleaned and stripped, but not media blasted (yay!). The metal has a neat pattern from when the orignal bar stock was rolled. Looks reminiscent of Damascus steel! The pattern makes it easy to see the lever was not cut off and relocated, although it doesn't rule out the possibility that it was originally an M/T pedal to which a kickdown was added. But I have a high level of confidence it's an original. The kickdown is twisted a bit but it will be easy to straighten. I'll post some pics after it's straightened.

By the way, it appears from Scott's photo that the lever and bracket were painted semi gloss black - is that correct?
