So I pulled my rear end out to detail before this years MCA show in Reno and soaked my u bolts and spring plate on the passenger side in evaporust. Didn't find any markings on the plate but did find I think one on the u bolts. Can't tell what color though (pink or white maybe?). Anyone know what it should be and if they will be on all four and what the orientation of the dab on each u bolt? Like will the inner ones be in the front or back or both same for the outer u bolt. I attached one pic. The paint dab unfortunately wiped off :(
-
Pink on all 4.
-
Thanks Charles, will the pink be towards the front or the rear of the car?
-
Seen it towards the rear, but not sure if all like that.
-
My Jan 1966 Metuchen Built Hardtop had pink as well. On the top though.
-
+1 to the above pink paint dabs as well for both a 66 NJ February and March built car as well.

Would the mark have been to indicate for use with 8" or 9" housings, or to indicate that the u bolts had been tightened?

Most likely the size - don't believe its related to tightening.

I can tell you that I found my pink marks on my original u-bolts from my sprint 6 cylinder rear end. so, not sure if it is size.

Remember that other car models were built on the same line so not always referring to just Mustang applications. Since all the reports so far are from Mustangs and are similar color the size idea seems to fit so far since they all used the same rearend shock plate I believe
-
Location seems to be different. Mine were towards the bottom, tomtri66's were at the top. Maybe depends on year and plant??

Or maybe just the worker who was applying the mark that day ;)

Maybe I misunderstood. Were you referring to the axle size (ie. 7-1/4", 8" or 9") or the size of the axle tube?

If so then I must have not been clear or written my post well.
Was referring to the size of the U clamp. Since all use the same rearend shock plate they should all be the same (honestly have not checked the parts book to confirm)

It seems that all of the markings discussed are PINK for Metuchen built cars equipped with 289 and 200 engines. Would this be the same for Dearborn built cars of the same timeframe?

A number of the "sightings" were from San Jose also
Charles may have found same on a dearborn he did years ago but will leave it to him to confirm or say no
-
Thanks. That would be nice to know for my car and I bet a few other people on the Forum.
-
All 3 of my unrestored Dearborn cars have pink on the U bolts. One is Aug 64 and the other two are June 65.
-
mgmradio: Are the pink daubs on top of the "U" like tomtri66 and outlaw or on the back leg of the bolt like ChrisV289? Thanks
-
Mine are on the back leg not the top. Look at the pics in post #1
-
ChrisV289: Sorry, I changed my post so now it is correct.
-
;)
-
Dearborn cars: U-Bolt pink marking on the top or the legs? thanks.
-
My Aug 64 Dearborn car has them on the leg.
-
Thank you, pink on the legs. Appreciate the help. It's a nice detail to add.
