Curious to hear what others will say on this but I'm guessing the screw for the buck tag would be phosphate and oil and maybe the tag itself was bare metal???? My 67' Metuchen coupe and my buddies Dec'66 Metuchen coupe both have the buck tags on the driver's side next to the hinge mount.. neat to hear others have theirs mounted on the passenger side.

I am curious about this as well, unfortunately on my April 66 survivor the engine bay was "touched up" at some point so no idea if it should be black or not. Also I have a different type screw attaching mine than what is on rrenz's example.
-
Oct. '65 Metuchen car ......ALSO! :D My buck tag was on the passenger side next to the shock tower. The other difference with mine was the attaching screw. Mine used the "other" style common which was a round pan head (I believe that's the correct description). Since the buck tag was installed prior to painting the engine compartment (confirmed by the common lack of paint found underneath the tag), the tag and attaching screw were painted over in black. If anyone knows something different than this I'd be happy to be corrected. In the image of your buck tag it appears that you can actually see evidence of the unpainted area under the tag.
While mine may have had other stamps, the only one I've located so far was a "Paint OK Conger" in yellow on top of the passenger side inner fender above the solenoid. I have also seen a "Paint OK Martz" on a friend's Metuchen car (unfortunately I don't have the build date). It was stamped in white and was located under the hood on the center of the support structure.
Location updated!
-
JKWilson,
mine also has the "round pan head" screw and it on the drivers side as well.
-
Buck tags were installed (with the screw) before the engine bay was painted, so would be black.

Charles,
Should the screw head be rounded or flat?
-
I am sure Charles is better informed to tell you the "when", both are correct but during different production times.
-
One thing I thought of just after my reply (after all of this time it JUST occurred to me), is the question of whether there is any correlation to the usage being tied to the same usage period for the rear valance screws. Both of the same screws were used there also but again, during different production time frames (e.g. if a flat screw was used on the buck tag were those same cars getting flat screws as attaching hardware for the rear valance, and the same for the pan head screws?!).
-
Buck Tag: here you can see the black Buck tag with a punch out and the unpainted metal beneath it. So yes, as was posted. The tag and the screw had to be on the body before paint.
-
Here is the screw. Passenger side Buck tag.
-
So then at what point was the buck tag added?? Would it have been after the first coat of red oxide primer?? Just before the black-out of the firewall?? My 67' never had severe rust under this area so i'm guessing it wasn't left bare metal. :o

That's a cool detail that is not seen very often on a restored car...
As far as the screw type, I have seen the panhead and flat top larger screw. I don't have any info to share on when either were used.

My best guess is right after the uni-body was welded up. The punch-outs would have been done by inspectors, probably making sure holes and modifications per the options called out on the bucktag were complete.
-
Very interesting... I better get out the paint stripper and get to work under my body buck tag. :-[
Just kidding. But good info! 8) Thanks Charles
-
Noticed mine has 3 punch punch holes, 1 on the left bottom and 2 on the right side, there is bare metal under it as well.

My July 65 Metuchen coupe has a large flat top screw attaching the buck tag, similar to the screws used for the rear valance.

I can provide the following related to the mounting hardware used for a 66 NJ built Mustang from my collection. I see a pattern but the sample is limited and since the cars were not assembled in sequential order the grouping should be a bit "fuzzy"
Hope it helps in some way

Im fairly certain my tag was never removed over the years. I also had bare metal and a fair amount of rust under mine. I believe i put mine back on before spraying the engine bay hoping that was going to be correct..
-
Looks like we might want to split the topic since at least half of the thread is focused on one detail. It would make searching or finding 66 NJ Buck tag info easier for others in the future and leave the thread to cover the other details as asked for in the first post

Charles,
Should the screw head be rounded or flat?
I can tell you my Jan 20 build screw is flat.

Do you see any correlation between the buck tag screw and the rear valance screws? As I noted earlier, my July 65 Metuchen coupe has a large head screw on the buck tag and the same type screws on the rear valance.

Got it and thanks.
Think I'm splitting the thread. Fine it rewarding that we can pull together data like this and (even based on a small amount of the over all production) discover trends and patterns. Doesn't always work this well

For you and JKWilson I have to report that I don't have as much data to draw a conclusion from. People take and provide allot of buck tag pictures - not as many taking rear valance screw.
Looked and the one car I have the buck tag screw was not the same style as the rear valance

If anyone needs a visual reference, here's a shot of the large head screw from my late 65.

Have you tried adding air to inflate it?
Sorry...back to your regularly scheduled programing.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but what size is it, a #8 or a #10?

I believe it's a #10.

October 65 build. Unfortunately, I cannot attest to the originality, but hope it helps.
I also have a '66 "T" code with a build date of March if memory serves. I believe it has the screw that mjd 65 posted.

Same pan head screw on my Oct 65 built a couple weeks earlier

I borrowed this buck tag shot from Charles' post in the Fleet Color thread. Good example of the large head Phillips screw.

What's of more interest to me is the type of fender bolts, spring shield (upper A-arm bumper bracket) and hood hinge bolts that are visible. The shield bolts are of the external tooth washer design with a HTS head marking, the hinge and fender (barely visible) are the toothed disc design. This on a mid-April 66 build Metuchen car. Also of note, this VIN is listed in the Mustang Production Guide.

Like me to get a better pic of the hinge and fender bolts?

If you are going to post pictures, start a new thread in the Parts section and title it "Bolt Head Markings, 64-66". Please include where the bolts are located (fender, hood, etc), the VIN or at least the plant and build date. This is a project that has generated interest but no action and maybe it's time to do something about it. Other year cars, start another thread with a title of "Bolt Head Marking, 67-68", "Bolt Head Marking, 69-70" "Bolt Head Marking, 71-73" or "Bolt Head Marking, Other Ford Products" (Cougar, Fairlane, etc).

My Dec 65 built 66 has the flat screws on the buck tag and rear valance. Interesting point. No punch holes though! I am actually collating a speed sheet on NJ buck tags for 64 1/2 to 66 cars so please feel free to send pictures of them in to me via a PM to help me with my research.
Thanks!
Dan.

........ I am actually collating a speed sheet on NJ buck tags for 64 1/2 to 66 cars so please feel free to send pictures of them in to me via a PM to help me with my research.
Dan what about starting a separate/new thread with that request or to have members post to the thread since you can't send a picture through the PM system?
Some may have many examples to share and retyping them all in a message might hold them back from joining in. Also retyping will leave out any punch mark/shapes and other details. Just a thought
In 1998 I did The Unofficial Buck Tag Chain Letter we I invited a bunch of people to send in all the buck tag info they had (buck tag and what options and accessories each car had) which we compiled and then the completed project was sent out to each participant. Looks like there are 7 or so pages of cars from your year and plant
