I need to replace the gear shift lever(that comes out of the transmission). ( The lever is broken off of the outer shaft) I read an article indicating that with the pan off, leaving the valve body on, the nut can be loosened with a hammer and long punch, and the outer shaft removed, the nut held in place and a new outer shaft installed and secured with the nut. Any one have any experience with this method? Sounds good to me, as opposed to removing the valve body.

I will go ahead and answer my own question....no, the nut cannot be removed with the valve body installed...there was just no way. After removing the valve body, A 7/8" box wrench worked fine.
