Title: Front Inner and Outer Bumper Arms Joined Together?
Post by: 66RavenGTCoupeAgain on September 01, 2016, 12:23:35 AM
Hey guys,
(65 SJ Convertible Shed Oct 20th 1964)
My inner and outer bumper arms are joined together through one of the bolt holes as shown in the pictures. There is like a collar holding them together. Its the same on both sides. Was this a factory thing or did a previous owner get creative?
Thanks,
Dan

It's a factory thing, I've seen it on other SJ cars.

Unusual IMHO but did take place for a short time. Never did a survey but it appears to be a test that was tried at San Jose likely in hopes of speeding installation up.

Unfortunately, nearly impossible to determine once the brackets are installed.  I think Mark H said 003 had brackets like this.  I found the same on the Jan/Feb San Jose cars I worked on/disassembled.

Thumbing through bumper pictures (for a response to another thread) found a set of brackets with the "thing" :) attached to a bumper dated 3 6 M5

Interesting.  My SJ Oct 9, 1964 scheduled build date K (Oct 15, 1964 engine assembly date) has "it" on both bumper brackets. Noticed this when I took it apart, but assumed it was welded.

Gotta admit, I love having an early 65 car.  Enjoy chasing down strange details like this, which in itself is strange.   ;)

Thanks everyone. Very Interesting. So you would have the carryover front chassis rail to radiator support arms that are affixed at about 45 deg to each other with two holes in each arm instead of one hole too Livetoride60? I've been told on here that the "extra" holes were for the original mounting of the horns for 64 1/2 cars. Just thought I'd share. ;)

Well what do you know, learned something new.  Yep, they're there.  Thanks.

I didn't come across any when I took mine apart but the bumper had been changed out prior to 1992 since I know there is some evidence of a slight fender bender (stone guard is twisted a little on the driver side and the passenger  bumper bracket was bent).  I do have a friend in Tucson who has a similar color car with a build date in November.  I can have him check...
