Title: 70 underhood pad

My Mach has an intact (albeit ragged) OEM underhood pad. Has anyone else tried to restore or reconstruct this molded fiber pad? Ive got some ideas on how to proceed but wanted to ask. Thanks for your reply.

A couple of National parts vendors have researched remaking them (heat formed to the inner structure of the original hoods)  but none to my knownledge have been successful in finding anyone capable of reproducing them correctly so we currently left with flat - not very close reproduction. Haven't heard of any one repair them except for some edges and smaller damaged spots

Odd that you can't get them for Mustang when I got a rigid formed one for my 65 Impala.
The repro market doesn't have a lot of love for them compared to Mustang that's for sure.
Wish I knew the manufacturer to ask if they could branch out to Mustang.

Don't know Chevys but if its a rigid formed part then the product is different than what Ford used during that period.

The repro picture does give the look of fiberglass, but the part is actually cushy.
This survivor pic is a better illustration.
You can see the worn edge exposing the fluffyness.
Do you agree it looks akin to Mustang in construction?
Wouldn't surprise me if originals had asbestos in them, so any repro is going to be different without it.
They weren't just sound deadener, they were to smother fire too.
Didn't work as well with metal retainer clips though.
They were changed to plastic in 66 so a fire would melt them and allow the blanket to fall and form right around the motor to be more effective.

Looks like Chevy that year originally used a similar material. Still to bad that used originals are typically beyond reuse and reproductions have been so far from original
