Hi,
Can someone told me how to install the stone guard deflector. Need to know if the bucket light need a hole for the square bolts in the stone guard ? Or how its atttach together !
-
Stud mounted/attached to the stone guard passes through the headlight bucket and through bracket to radiator support and is held in place with a nut from below.
Oval hole in the bracket - looks like a round hole in the headlight bracket
Though I believe they are out of order this picture may help

Perfect thanks for the help. So i need to drill hole in my bucket !
-
I am a bit confused, pic shows the bucket bracket under the support bracket, text says it should be above. I have both versions left and right, but one bucket was exchanged in 1984.
The 67 Oswald Assembly Manual Shows it should be on top of the support, but not clearly, the 68 is even more fuzzy. Searched the Web, but I see both, the bucket bracket under the support and above. Assembly mistakes possible ex works?
What is more correct? Pic or text above?

Some more information is needed. What Osborn book are you using? What page? What item number?

68 Version Assembly manual
And 68 Workshop manual attached. Need to find the 67 drawing again.
The bucket bracket fits on top and under the support, but may break easier, if cracks are already in the potmetal.
3rd pic is the bucket bracket under the support on my car. If it needs to go between Support and Stone guard, I would like to correct it now before breaking it.
(Restoration will be done next year)

Item numbers, please.

Usually, the item numbers shown by Ford on assembly drawings are also the item assembly order - usually. So, obviously item 7, both brackets to the outside edges of the radiator support, go on first. Here's the trick part, both headlight buckets, items 10 and 11 are installed to the fenders, then item 8, the stone guard with one each "screw and retainer" 379749-S2 installed on each end, and then that "sub-assembly" is dropped into the headlight bucket/outside brackets, item 7, and attached to item 7 with 2 each 376838-S2 nuts from underneath.
Try a "dry" fit with both item 7 brackets and both headlight buckets installed, then try the stone guard. The hood lock support (item 1), the center bracket (item 6) and the grille (item 5 - ?) should be in place as well.
It's been a while since I put together a 68 so I'm running on "memory".
The "screw and retainer" 379749-S2 is still carried by AMK. Use AMK stock number B-11564.

Revised 1.1.:
Thank you, I am not sure if you say, the support goes under the bucket or above? from the assembly sequence it makes sense due to accessability of the support screws to install the supports first and put the bucket on top of the support, unless fenders with buckets were already on the car.
The number sequence implies, fenders were on and the bucket is installed separately. True?
It was the pic in the second Post above and many restoration pics online, which caused me thinking, if the Supports end under or above the bucket. Easier to align the support than the bucket, or?
On my car they both fitted better under the support end, maybe because of a front end repair on the codriver side (bumper is bend down a bit).
I will try to check more cars (many have broken end pieces) and test mounting it on top. Thanks again.

The ends of the stone guard have to fit ON TOP of the headlight buckets. That's because of the screw and retainer assembly. You can see the "recess" in the buckets for the ends.
The item numbers related to assembly sequence is what and how engineering "designed" the vehicles. When the assembly line gets their drawings, instructions and parts, they often come up with a better way to assemble the vehicles. That change is fed back to engineering, but engineering does not change item numbers to satisfy the assembly line - Ford produces cars, not paper.
And also keep in mind that Ford did NOT produce concourse grade vehicles. (We do.)

Ok. Clear now. Thank you. Might come back with a picture soon.

Just to feedback. Found both supports above the headlight bucket in the end, also checking my earlier pics before disassembly. Not a reference, since the car had been apart twice.
But I asked a few 68 mates and some have it on top or underneath. I assume the one pic above labelled with concours was an unrestored car.
Problem after 5 decades is the cracking of the stiff potmetal, so one must be careful about gaps between the potmetal end and the support (and treat the crack of course with JB Weld, a supporting device or liquid metal)
I tried liquid metal and it seems to work on the potmetal in 2 tests so far. A supporting mesh metal or thin metal bracket stiffens it. I have yet to see how long it will hold up any movement from air pressure at speed.
The support itself is height adjustable and remains sideways a bit flexible due to its construction - obviously for the fast assembly method of connecting Headlight, stoneguard and bracket.

The picture in reply #1 is a picture of a car in a wrecking yard so guess it's was unrestored but not unmolested. The concours is part of the site watermark applied to all pictures stored and then posted on this site

This picture was taken during disassembly of my signature car. The headlight bucket is on top of the bracket.
-
Thats exactly correct....headlight bucket will be on top of that bracket as shown in the last post. Thats a good photo.
-
Thank you, M. and Marcus. Good to see a previously unrestored one.
During reassembly I recognised meanwhile it is indeed easier to drop the stone guard through the bucket holes and connect down through the supports for proper alignment, then adjust fender/extension and finally the supports. It seems that many (including myself) first align the fender/extension and tighten them up, creating alignment issues with the stoneguard, which are followed by cracks.
They came to this conclusion as well in this video at the minute 2.00.

Anyway costs me a replacement bucket. Fortunately I found locally two original spares to redo it in the next resto:-)
