Not something you normally see (inside of extension) but I found a C5 NOS piece (left) is made different than the one originally on the car.
Was there any type of sealer installed between the extension and the quarter?

This is generally accepted as a 65 vs. 66 change, with the part on the left being the '66 version. Don't know the exact change in production, can probably check some resources in a few days that might yield an idea. If you decide to use the one on the left, it does require a rubber gasket, which is available in reproduction... same as the 67/8 style material.

Interesting....thanks Charles. The one on the right is off of my 65 April 19th Dearborn car. I suspect it's original. Funny they didn't use a gasket on the early cars, just a gap between the extension and the body.
Seems like the 66 version could fit without using a gasket?

Yeah, Ford was weird with this stuff. The 1968-1969 Falcon had a similar deal.
The 1968 Falcon extentions were actually made of fiberglass and had no rubber seals, and the 1969-70 Falcon extentions were made of metal and had the seals. Both year seals were interchangeable. I'm sure that the Fairlane was the same. I think Ford played around with various methods on the tailight extentions through the 60's..at least that's what I've found. I have also found that Canadian Plants had different parts than U.S. Plants, though the Mustang does not play into that of course.

The more I learn, the less I understand! ;D
Thanks....

The '66 version will fit, but you need to use a gasket.

Is the gasket visible? If so, a 66 version wouldn't be concours correct for an early 65 right?
(Slowly trying to learn about these early cars!!!) ;)

These will fit a 65,66 however their are many revisions to the quarter extensions and the pins are different on each revision to match the quarter panel. so their for a 1964 quarter panel c5zz-a for example the holes will line up with the pins on a c5zz-a quarter extension however a c5zz-a quaterpanel will not line up with a c5zz-b quarter extension make sense? thats why you see many quarter panel reemed out to make the quarter extension fit. You don't have to used the gasket if you don't want to on your 65 but some quarter adustment will be necessary

Interesting.. I'm amazed at the number of changes on these early cars.

Sorry to hi-jack this topic, but there were both fiberglass and pot metal rear quarter extensions used in 1969. I have had both, but cannot recall the engineering numbers on them.
