Title: Headlight bowl finish?

My car's headlight bowls have what looks like old zinc plating (or maybe silver CAD?).
However several nice restorations I've seen have theirs painted semi gloss black.
I've also seen some NOS Ford service replacements for sale, that are semi gloss black.
So what should they be?

(March 68' Metuchen S code)

I have never have seen any thing but semi gloss black in any of the assembly plants for 67-68.
