Title: Shackle Finish
Post by: mustanging on August 30, 2010, 07:10:55 PM
I just order a set of rear shackles from Rare Parts for a 1970 Dearborn built Boss 302.  They came with a black e-coat type shiny finish with a phos & oiled serrated staked bolt.  What is the correct finish?

Media blast them first, than phos. and oil them.

You will need to strip the coating off (would not suggest blasting since that will change the surface texture unless you follow that up with a ceramic tumble)

We finish them as bare new steel (I like gun bluing brightened with steel wool but plenty of other paths to the same look) with weld blue at the stud end (where the one plate attaches to the two studs) and a heat treated look to the stud.

IMHO this best reproduces, for me, the two tone look of originals

Same car: Dearborn May  70 built Boss 302

What should the finish be on the Shackle nuts?

Also what is the correct finish on the leaf spring front bolt and nut?

Thanks

The shackle nuts were typically cadmium plated.

Front eye bolt would be natural darkened steel or phosphate works ok.  Big washer was zinc plated and lock nut would be cadmium.  There may have been some variance on these finishes based on supplier.
