Hi,
Have a question.
Disc Brake Master Cylinder Cap.
To me it appears that at least my master cylinder + cover is not correct. Seems to be 1973.
My question. Would it be possible just to exchange the cover into C7AZ-2162-B, which is the more correct one, or do I need to replace the whole block?

(source: R. U.)
Or even to go this route:
I also read M. Anghels cylinder cap article, where it is stated that early 67 had a black painted cover with a C6AZ marked red/silver decal.
What to do from here? Any recommendations?
Many thanks.

There are two answers. Yes, you have the typical replacement cover that was used on many remanufactured units. Your master cylinder should also be painted black and as mentioned in about every post for 1967-70 power brake boosters, it would all be painted as a unit originally. Component painting will stand out.
Then, you have to wonder if the cylinder on your car is even an original-style Bendix or not. Easiest way is to reach underneath and feel for the center-bolt in the bottom side. Replacement cylinders usually only have the casting area, with no bolt. Then, you have the hex-head type or the allen bolt type. I think your date shoeld have the hex bolt type but others may be better to ask that detail from. I began my restoration with pretty much the same questions and same incorrect parts on my example. Most 50-year-old cars have had this item replaced 1 if not 5 times over the years.

Nothing to feel....

Found this one on ebay. To what I know, not a for a 67, but at least a NOS (Bendix). Bolt + cap not correct for 67.
Hex bolt are used 1967 to early 1968 + flat (smooth) cap + decal for 67. Paint black correct.
Button head allen stop bolt I think it is around 70-72:

Am I correct?
Thx

The master cylinder body portion is the same for 67-71 . The cone shaped style stop bolt started sometime in 68 production. The lid with the embossed top started in 69 production. They were all painted complete with top a black color.

Thx Bob.
Means the ebay part is more or less a 68/69 power disc master cylinder.
Cant identify stamping numbers.
So, finally it is not the correct one for my car, means make no sense to bid!?
Hm, I think I gonna bid.....lets see.

Sold US $452,00

Ralf : I trust you were not the successful bidder ? Not only is it the wrong cap for your early '67 (which, yes you can just swap caps to the correct "70R3" one as shown in you previous picture), but the stop bolt is incorrect. Not only is the button head Allen bolt head incorrect, but its thread is incorrect, so you can't just replace it with the correct stop bolt. The correct hex head is a 1/4-28, but the button head Allen is 5/16-18 ! If you have a lathe, yiu can make a correct appearing stop bolt as Bossbill did (see this threads under "Misc Items" - http://www.concoursmustang.com/forum/index.php?topic=15836.0

Not trying to highjack the thread, but have a question that pertains. I wanted to put the fancy gold SD cover on my master (as a dress up not concourse) I got the master from the local parts house along with my rebuilt Midland booster specifying that I wanted a master for power disc as I converted system. The SD cover doesn't fit. The cover is slightly smaller in over all size and don't go over the casting. The master I got just has the casting on the underside, no bolt. If the body portions are all the same size from 67 to 71 wondering why the cover don't fit?

Thx Bob.
No, I was not.
To me, even as a newbie on these things, it was finally clear, it was the wrong master cylinder at least for my car.
If you don't mind, I'll send you a pm.
Thx Ralf.

The most likely reason is that the master cylinder is not a Bendix unit but a aftermarket alternative that is a slightly different size. I have seen numerous after market ones before that were larger. I don't know for sure what the issue is with yours but it is a common scenario with auto parts store rebuilds.

Thank you Bob! Would there be casting numbers on an original? Not that I am overly worried on originality, just identity. Also May help Ralf in his quest.

I found finally one on ebay, which hopefully fits correctly. It is a repro, but a good and affordable one (at least for me), incl. correct 2227161 casting number, hex bolt, dimple (bump) on the top left.
Thx to all.

Yes there are. You should read this entire thread because it has all the answers you ask, but here is the short answers again. It will have the Bendix trade mark on the bottom of a original assemblyline unit. The casting numbers that Bendix used may also be on some aftermarket units so that in itself is not a certainty of identification. The casting number is 2227161. It will have a stop bolt sticking down on the bottom the assembly the different appearance of each type used identifies the time it was used. It will also have a small raised bump above the forward brake line fitting.
