Title: Ford Thompson Pump
Post by: bryancobb on September 18, 2010, 02:37:15 PM
Does Anyone have any pictures of a well detailed teal power steering pump and pulley and bracket w/bolts, for a March 1966 C-Code Metuchen car with A/C?

Thanks a lot!  I THOUGHT the 65 ford pumps were always black?  MIne is a 66 so I know it's teal.
So the dataplate tag is painted? And I see the whole front casting is painted, not natural?
Are the water pump bolts painted?  Black or Corporate Blue?  I think with PS, you discard the thick water pump bolt washer, right?
What determines if the small diameter pipe with a Dairy Queen curly-Q dipstick or the large diameter one with 1/4-turn big cap dipstick is used?

My understanding is that that 65 could be teal or black depending on certain things.  I think mine is supposed to be black but I bought this off ebay already done.  The filler neck is suppose to be that large on 65-66, the smaller neck didn't start until 67 I believe.  It actually had a 67 pump on this car when it was bought in 92 and I believe the first or second owner probably had it changed out because the original went bad.  I'll never know if it had the eaton power steering pump or the ford pump originally.  It is an early fastback built 10-29-64.  I would assume the water bolt pumps would be blue on your car if it is a 66.

The color of the pump depended on the supplier (Ford or TRW) The tag on the rear tells you the supplier.

If the tag is missing, how do you tel which?
The Mannel book doesn't say I don't think.

Do not know of any other method of identification - and none of the TSB articles I have give any clue other than the tag

Just to add to Jeff's reply- Ford Thompson= Blue . TRW = Black. Bob

What would the tag say on which supplier?

Guess I should have been more complete with my answer

So if you will look at the FAQ's of the sections you will find in the

" GENERAL FAQ’s that apply across categories and sections."

It was included there since this has been a very popular question since the internet first became available to us regular fokes

You will find Question #7 withe a complete response ;)

Guess I don't have to worry about painting my pump black since it has an F in the middle line indicating it's a Ford Thompson - teal

Thanks a lot Chris.

Is this what I'm seeing?

Crank Pulley - 3 grooves  (I know my 66 pulley P/N is different from yours though)
Water Pump Pulley  -  2 grooves   (I know my 66 pulley P/N is different from yours though)

Most rear groove  =  crank + water pump + alternator
Middle groove      =   crank + water pump + power steering pump
Front groove       =   crank + A/C + A/C idler pulley

Is this correct?

The crank pully I have has three grooves.  The most rear groove has the alternator belt.  The middle groove contains the power steering belt and the front groove has the AC belt.

The water pump pully has two grooves;  The rear groove has the alternator belt and the front groove has the power steering belt.

The AC belt is only on the crank pully and the AC idler pully.

Does that help?
