Title: 1967-1968 tilt wheel rag joint
Post by: Hipo giddyup on April 01, 2018, 02:01:03 PM
Hi all, I recently found this tilt wheel rag joint in a box of Mustang parts at a local swap meet. My question is, what is the best way to refurbish this? Were the metal portions PO?? I was thinking of soaking it in evaporust but I was worried that the rag joint material might swell or be damaged??? Any tips?

Portions are PO and others bare steel . It will be fine in the evaporust. The joint material  is very tough and doesn't swell in all of the times I have done it.

As Bob wrote it will clean up well since it appears to be in good shape. The different shades will likely show through once its soaked. If not the contrast can be increased by restoring (using gun blueing repair fluid, small brush and so on) to the cast sections.

Remember to coat it to protect it from rusting once done.

Thanks for the reply guys. I’ll post a few pics when I’m done as an example for others viewing this.

As a follow-up I just wanted to post a few pics of the rag joint after being soaked in evaporust. Turned out pretty nice. It looks like there are a few white paint marks on the rag joint? And on the edge of the rag joint also looks what appears to be red paint or marker? Not sure what this could be or it might be nothing.?

It looks nice. I have not seen paint on them but I have not seen on a unrestored car.

On the second pic you can see white splotches towards the center of the rag joint material. Right near the cast piece. The last picture shows what looks to be red paint or red marker on the outside edge. Not sure what this could be? Maybe nothing?

I believe that rubber is recycled, just like the rubber on the exhaust hangers....

That's possible, but from what? You can see white sidewall remains on exhaust hangers, and the rubber is twisted. This rubber is flat.

It's obvious: it's from a flat tire!

Only on the bottom.
