Title: 68 4-speed VIN stamping??

I have a RUG E-2 tagged, C8AR main case toploader, and on the edge of the mounting flange above the drivers side top mounting bolt is stamped 8R170327. The 170327 are nicely lined up, evenly spaced and evenly stamped. Almost like some sort of tool or machine was used. The 8 and R are in line also but are more lightly stamped. Would this be 8 - 1968, R - San Jose, 170327 - consecutive vin. I thought manual transmissions were stamped on the bottom. Thanks. Brian

It was stamped in San Jose during the 60's. (Remember the "Hippie Generation"?)

Must have gotten it nice and neat in that section. Of course with the thin edge of the part he had less room to work with and that likely kept things neater that those were more room (engine blocks) was available

Where and what was stamped depended on plant and production period . Must have been looking at earlier examples

I've owned several top loaders from various plants. All have been stamped on the top, some on the driver side and some passenger. Even a '65 Mustang (Dearborn, coupe, 289-4V) had the VIN stamped there which surprised me.

Would surprise me also. Have dozens (65-67) stamped on the small boss on the bottom rear of the main case. Then then are the examples of Deaborn on the case in front of that pad or even on the side of the case
