Hi,
for my application (1967 390 GT, November 66 San Jose), the correct speedometer cable part number is C7ZZ-17260-J.
I have two NOS speedometer cables and one is gray, a common service part, I suppose.
The other cable has a black housing and a tag with the identification number C7ZF-17260-A, which corresponds to service part number C7ZZ-17260-J.
Is the black one an early replacement part or a factory part?

Original cables are black. The service replacements are gray.

Service replacements were available (depending on era and supplier) in black or gray
Black one appears to be a service replacement also but my choice between the two

I removed this cable from an unrestored Dearborn (May 67) 390 automatic car. Could this cable be a factory part?

Is it the same color and can you identify any writing on it that matches the yellow on this cable?

The reason I ask is that maybe the identifying label (type) from the first pic was wrapped around the cable in the second -- which would make it a service cable.
Hard to tell from this distance.

Hi Bill,
the yellow marks do not come from the label but were already on the cable when installed in the car.
Here a picture of the unrestored underdash with the speedometer cable installed.
Regarding the markings, I may recognize a "C7ZZ..." marking in blue and the firewalle grommet has "RA-8157" and "FK-76" markings.

I had an original Drag Pack speedo cable that had a yellow paint daub on it. Not sure if it was supposed to be a reference mark for locating a clamp or something, but I agree the yellow paint daub didn't just bleed through from packaging and was deliberately placed on the cable housing.

Agree also that it was applied on purpose and for a purpose.
Marking parts or sections of parts was not an unusual practice by sub contractors. IMHO its often done so that an installer can identify (possibly in this case) a particular end) a part with ease and quickness to speed up the install practice. Other examples would be rubber engine mounts and transmission mounts. In those examples seeing where those points quickly help workers in the pit see and guide those to this locations quicker
In the speedo cable example it would have helped a worker to identify the right end, and once under the dash stand out more for another worker to guide it to the speedometer
