Title: inner fender bolt next to door hinge
Post by: Tiny on November 12, 2018, 05:18:13 AM
I'm trying to identify the correct mounting nut/clip etc that is located on the inner part of the fender where it mounts just near the door hinge.  (Hope I have explained that correctly)  Having removed the fender, there is what appears to be some sort of nut (similar to the nut that is used on the lower part of the fender where it attaches to the sill).  The nut I have removed appears to have pulled away from the fender and is distorted so I cant get a good idea of what it should look like.  (I cannot locate an image online anywhere).

I guess my question is, should the nut be welded into the fender and fixed or should it be similar to the lower fender mount nut.

The nut your talking about is put inside the guard and I don't think you can buy one , you will have grind a nut down a re spot weld it into the guard to look like the original

A picture would help. I'm looking at the 66 Body Assembly Manual (pg 9) and there is no nut where you described.

I have provided some photos.  Appears that the nut has been pulled out and that the nut should be welded in (Fixed) as being original.  Let me know your thoughts.

I'm confused as well?? It sounds as if you are describing the nut welded within the fender, accessed in the door jam area. I hope this picture explains the location?? If this is correct, and the nut is unusable, the only solution I can think of is to remove it and weld in another.

The Ford part number is 34362-S, 5/16-18 Pierce Nut, 0.490 X 0.687 X 0.281 as measured. The mounting hole should be 0.490 X 0.500.
I believe that old man rust froze the fender bolt to the nut and an excessive amount of force removed the two together.
See the picture and chart.
Measure the hole in the fender; drill and tap a 1/4 inch thick steel bar or plate an appropriate distance from an edge to 5/16-18; using the tapped hole as center, cut the bar width to the hole width; grind the step to the hole length and panel thickness; cut the bar length 1/4 inch longer on each end; weld; grind; paint; have 2nd (or 3rd) beer. (Life is good.)

Just purchase or find the original nut, place back in the hole, bend the metal back to hold it in place and you can tack weld the corners down slightly so they don't show since the corners of the opening appear to have been torn a little.  File or grind down the face so the welds do not interfer with the alignment of the fender to the bracket it will bolt to

Guess one could try and epoxy it on the back side to hold it in place if you wanted to since it will not show on the final product
