Originally I could not find any evidence of my VIN on my Transmission, but after vapour blasting the transmission case today I was very please to find my VIN stamped on the case on one of the ears. Just curious if the VIN stamp is legit before I get too excited.
Thanks

Well you have to consider when the main case was cast and what the serial number of the trans is then compare them to when the car was built. If those fit within what could have worked for the car then you compare the stamping to other trans stamped at the same plant - and hopefully a few from the same time period.
Its a bit early int he morning so will wait to compare until a few hours from now ;)
Darin plug has been replaced at some point

Looks legit from here.

Thanks Jeff I am not sure when the main case and tail shaft housing were cast

Third picture shows the casting date for the main case (lower right in the picture) Looks like it could be a "C" and I believe that is what you provided (with a number) in another thread you posted.
Tailshaft housing is more difficult to make out and it could have been swapped from another trans and it is not part of the body that the VIN is stamped onto

Date casting is very hard to read. I will see if I can get a better photo, but I have not been able to make it out the date on the tail shaft or the main case for that matter. However the main question is if the VIN stamp looks correct. So far there appear to be no attempts at any re-stamping on the rest of the car. So given the VIN stamp would it be safe to assume that the trans came with the car.

Currently comparing fonts and other details found on other late 68 San Jose examples. Looking good but want to try and provide the best information possible given what is available currently.

Lets remember that findings at one plant have almost no relationship to practices of another plant ;) and comparing these can lead to incorrect assumptions.
Since the title of the thread does not specify what plant the OP was asking about I'll correct that now to keep things from becoming confusing
This is a good example of why we try and title threads with the details so we don't get cross input and possible confuse details

Thanks Jeff. I guess you added San Jose to the title. For a moment I was confused and though that I had included it in my original post. FYI I checked the David Kee site and he did show that some transmissions have the VIN located on the ears, mainly CJ and Shelby’s according to his site

Yes unfortunately many of the pictures you find on the internet don't include enough info about the source to make them useful. Sometimes you can look to see where they (the poster) is located and make guess but i would never use that method since its so unreliable
