Title: 69 Dearborn seam sealer question
Post by: carm on January 31, 2019, 09:13:29 PM
I have applied the slop primer sealer onto the undercarriage and also primed the front clip. Common knowledge is that the next step is to apply the seam sealers along the back of the pinch weld and around the seat belt supports before the body colour which will overspray over the undercarriage and of course over some of the sealers.
Why then, do I continue to see cars with black seam sealer on the floor pans in the area in front of the leaf springs applied after the body color overspray. Is there some reason for this.

Thanks Carm.

So would it be correct to apply this seam sealer (in front of leaf springs) after the painting process ? Maybe at same time as the galvanize floor plugs were installed. :o

Deadners are generally done prepaint, while sealers are post paint.

Im pretty sure floor drains are post paint and sealed with rope caulk..

First added to the title so that the discussion can focus on a single plant and year

First I'm hoping that your looking at unrestored cars and not restored ones.

Not all 69 Dearborn cars had sealant applied along the front rear spring toque box to floor seam and often when it was the last coat of paint over this area would often be the black from the pinch well black out process.

With a car like yours this area often got a coat of sound deadener back in those areas so that would cover any of these details in the long run.  Have found examples with body color over the sealer (when applied) along this rear torque box and the rear seat belt inner mounts.m Often there were areas of the surface where the paint was cleaned or wore off since the base material is flexible. Similar to what we find after 50 years in the trunks where the body color no longer is visible/present on the spray seam sealer

The installation of the floor pan plugs was a different station much later using different products

Jeff, this is a picture during the cleaning of the undercarriage. You will notice remains of seam sealer. What do make of it?

IMHO the car looks like it was never restored, seam sealer looks like it was there before body color and no undercoating anywhere. And yes it once had side pipes

Looks like the worker on your car made the turn and sealed the rear spring torque box panels to the floor.

Looks like someone sprayed your whole floor black at some point in the past. Can see red oxide floors, body color, sealant and black top coat. Can't see any spot where the body color and sealer come in contract in the pictures and of course with the black over everything at some point - no sign of the pinch weld spray

Dis save and enlarge the picture allot - thanks for a decent resolution picture :)

The red oxide you see is actually a brownish primer. We scanned the original floors  and we thought there was a mistake made when we opened the can of paint. It looked chocolate brown but shows up a pinkish hue in pictures with a flash or when in the sunlight. In this picture we can clearly see the difference between the floor paint and the weird strip of red oxide stripe that is on the passenger side behind the pinch weld. A similar stripe was found on the passenger side but in grey oxide.

you will notice that the car does not have its' original leaf springs. Somebody changed them for these DOZ.. Fortunately I was able to locate set of originals for the car. Not sure if they are date code correct yet.
