Title: Autolite yellow top coil with stamp
Post by: beatlemike on April 13, 2019, 10:31:13 PM
Does anyone make the Autolite yellow top ignition coil with the stamp rather than the decal? MCA judges will knock points off if your coil has a decal.

Thanks

There are a couple of placed that will restore and or restamp a coil.  Sure there are a couple of us that have stamps depending on what date range your looking for. Pain to stamp but often the originals were not very nicely done. Hopefully the judges are accepting those also as they should ;)

I take it that by the title including AUTOLITE you have a later car.

Information about the stamp and date coding in the article about date coding can be found in the Library section of the site

Just a few of the related threads from the past. You might find an option or two below. Always good (since we're getting very close to being around 10 years) to consider the date and check up to see what new information may be available

The stamp is only required on thoroughbred and unrestored categories

The MCA concours rules for 67-68 Mustang  and Shelby say no decals allowed.

I think Jack at  Dead Nuts On sells a stamped coil.

I find that the stamped marking (original) often is mostly or completely hidden by the mounting clamp. It's only barely visible on my most recent restoration, and even then you have to know where to look. I don't think it can be seen with the air cleaner in place.

As Jeff has stated, there are some folks out there who do all this. Here is one I have kept track of and bookmarked, but have not yet used:

I've been putting it off as a lower priority item, as RoyceP states, my coil is mounted on top of the intake, most of the lower surface is covered by the strap and all underneath the air cleaner. I have a decal on it now but you only see the bottom edge of it. Car is a factory smog and A/C car.

For those that are interested you might consider some things. Do you want to buy a repro coil that has been stamped? Are you sending a coil that you have that is repro or original to be stamped? Is the coil you are sending already restored  or do you need it restored? Are you wanting to buy a original used coil that has been cosmetically restored and stamped? All of these things will have a effect on a price and in many case what a particular seller may even be prepared to do. FYI as has been mentioned although dated stamps are nice once oriented in the coil bracket the date is most typically obscured by the bracket regardless of where it is mounted on the engine.typically the top portion or bottom portion is all that can be seen. The stamps were seldom perfect and frequently smudged in some way or the other . That is just how many were from the MFG.

Thank you Ruppstang. Yes, it appears Jack at Dead Nuts On will sell you an original Autolite or a repro coil with the stamp. He even will orient the placement of the stamp on the coil so it's visible. Just let him know which engine you have. As I mentioned in my original post, MCA rules (for 67-68 concours) require the stamp. If you have the decal, there's a 1 or 2 point deduction. I found out the hard way.  :(

FYI I would be careful having someone putting a coil stamp drastically in a different position then typical. A little different one way or the other may not look that out of the ordinary . However if a coil stamp is positioned all the way up on the coil or all they way down just so that it can be fully seen the odd position may cause a undesired deduction. At the very least there would be a note of a untypical position if I saw something that far off normal when judging.

On my 65 Shelby the stamp is completely hidden behind the bracket.

I bought a reproduction from JD Larson (ALL CLASSIC) and he made it up correctly and rotated or "clocked" per my instructions. Since I plan to drive my project and knowing this is an "extra measure" detail for the Driven Class, I plan to have a restored "without stamping" mounted to a coil bracket and the tools with me to change it if (when) needed. Essentially a "show only" part. Voltage regulator and starter solenoid also fall into this area of reproduction "fail" that I will have "show only" parts for with my Driven Mustang.

I believe my decal is coming off when I paint my carb spacer...thank you Texas Swede. You just helped me make up my mind!

I bought a restored original unit from JD Larson with correct date codes. Reproduced coils have not worked for me
in any of my two Shelbys. Always gave up very quickly.
