Title: 65 Heater Riser / Shield
Post by: ChrisV289 on July 01, 2019, 05:02:54 PM
Anyone have a reasonably priced uncut heat riser / shield? Paint can be bad as I will repaint but no holes. Also if possible a date code of 5A to 5E

Thanks
Chris

I have a few Chris. Where is the date code located on these??

Can't say I have identified that before.

It is on the side that faces out towards the bottom near the curve of the piece that goes up to the snorkel

Got it, never picked up on that. Let me take a look, I have at least two nice heat risers.

When I hear the term "Heat Riser", I think you are referring to a flap valve in the exhaust, thermostatically controlling the exhaust to force early engine warm-up by redirecting exhaust flow through the intake manifold exhaust passage.
I call the "heat shield" a heat shield and have heard it called a heat stove but terminology varies.

Fwiw, I call a Coca-Cola a "Coke" and a Pepsi a "Pepsi" but folks here in Ohio like to call them a "pop" and folks elsewhere call them a "soda" so what do I know ;)

No,  you are correct. I have heard heat riser from my Dad as in, heat rises to the air cleaner I guess? LOL

Ford calls the heat riser a "Shroud and Tube Assy" - C4OF-9A607-A, and a "Duct and Valve Assy" - C3AF-9A626-B. They are supposed to assist the engine rise to a good operating temperature along with the choke by ducting warm air into the carburetor. When the engine reaches it's optimum operating temperature, the choke is open from heat entering via the fitting on the RH exhaust manifold (289 engine), the flap valve closing off the warm air from the same fitting. In warm states, they operate quickly. In cold areas, it may take forever.
The exhaust version was not used (thankfully) in a 289.

Chris, the first one I came across has a stamping of 6M. I’m guessing far too late for what you need. I have another so I’ll rummage through my parts tomorrow to verify.

Thanks, Bill got me covered with a 5E date coded one.  I appreciate it though.  One piece down, many more to go for the blue one...
