Title: 1968 San Jose GT 390 Fastback Bumper Guards
Post by: bullitt68 on December 14, 2019, 06:12:57 PM
Just curious what was the determining factor for front and rear bumper guards. Were they strictly an option or did they come as part of any other option group. Same for the wheel well opening mouldings, were they part of any other option package or where they a stand alone option.

Thanks

Pre strike the bumper guards were standard. Post strike the wheel opening molding were combined with the bumper guards as a option. I have the Ford sales addendum some where, I'll post it if I can find it.

Don't you have a Marti Report?

Yes i do. It does not list them on it. I always like to double check and not assume. If I did need to add them now would be the time not after the fact

Thanks. Just curious. Did the 428 replace the 390 as the big block motor option or were both available in the last quarter.

Also how did the strike affect the Mustang. Was the strike at all the plants? Is there an article I can read. Sorry this is my first Mustang and I am still new

The 428 Cobra Jet had nothing to do with the 390. It was produced to compete.with super car engines like the 427 Camaro, 455 Oldsmobile and the 440 Mopar engines. The 390 Ford engines were  competitive with the 400 Pontiac, 396 Chevy, 400 Olds, Plymouth/ Dodge 383 etc.

I do believe the UAW strike effected all three Mustang plants. On Sep 7th the lines were shut down and cars sat idle right were they were until Nov 11th.

The 390 was available all year
The 428 Police Interceptor was used only on Shelbys
The 428 Cobra Jet was available mid year on Mustangs and Shelbys

Here is the 68 sales addendum that applied to the Mustang.  This document was dated 12-12-67.

Interesting that the collapsible spare was discontinued. You see that mistakenly put in 1968 Shelbys. It also explains why only a handful of early Mustangs received the option.

What are triple GT stripes. MY car only came with "C" stripe as far as I know

I cannot recall ever seeing those on a 68

Great thanks. So those would be instead of the "C" stripes. Were both available at the same time or the "C" Stripe replaced the triple GT stripe

Both were available at the same time. As Richard mentioned I have not seen a 68 with the rocker stripes either. The lack of interest is probably why they were discontinued.
