I bought a bunch of hardware from AMK during the recent restoration of my '68 1/2 R code Cougar. In the parts that are now remaining I have two air cleaner wing nuts. One is cad plated, the other one phosphate + oil finish. Both came from AMK, I probably double ordered somehow. Which was the original finish used on the May 428CJ air cleaner?

I am not sure if the plating is Cad or Zinc but definitely not the PO. At least some were zinc.

That makes sense; original ones look to be bright plated. This one P+O finished wing nut may just be a mistake from AMK.

Agree that zinc or silver cad will work. Might need to dull the zinc down if it comes out a little bright but either will look original
Same finish as the screws for the snorkel
