When did Ford start putting matching ID numbers on the engine blocks? I went looking on my 65 and cant find any. Just the engine ID tag

It was a federal requirement for the 1968 model year . Some earlier cars have serial numbers

Unless your '65 is a K code, it won't have a VIN stamp. The only thing that can be checked/aligned to the car is by comparing the engine component casting/stamped dates on each piece. As long as they are reasonably close to the scheduled build date, it's possible the engine is original, but no guarantee.

Federal law only required a VIN stamp on the four speed manual transmission during the 1965 model year. If the car had a three speed or an automatic then there would be no VIN stamp other than the ones on the body.

You asked about engine blocks. Ford interpreted the law as engine assembly. So starting with the 1968 model year, blocks, heads and intakes were all possible places for the stampings.

Or you could say all Mustangs of any year. I don’t know what year the law was passed but it predates Mustangs.

I've never seen a non-K code VIN stamp on a 65-66 4 speed trans.

Neither have I. My 66 came with a T-10 (no VIN) and then I bought a correct 66 toploader and it did not have a VIN.

Agree but have not always looked at each one I've owned or seen at a swap meet. Books produced by the feds during the 60's and 70's is where I believe the information came from that stated that the high performance transmissions were stamped and that I've referenced a number of times. Wonder why it would have been included and looked for by tens of thousands of detectives around the country if it was correct. Just the messenger :)

I had a D code '65 coupe with the VIN stamped on top of the transmission case where it bolts to the bellhousing. The bellhousing was 5 bolt and this was the narrow toploader. Sorry no pictures of it; that was in the 1970's. I parted the car out and then ended up trading the transmission for one of the later style top loaders at a transmission shop. It was a big deal, they ran the numbers through the Dallas police department before they would make the exchange. Took a few days since it was all phone calls and people looking through file cabinets back then.

exactly. Me either on any 64-66 mustang. I can't speak intelligently what Ford stamped on transmissions after 66.

I have a question regarding the drivetrain VIN stamping requirements. Does anyone know exactly what Law required the drivetrain components to be stamped?
All I can find is reference to the requirement for a dash tag to display the VIN, and then later laws that standardized VIN numbers.

Are you looking for the bill number or similar reference number? If so I haven't searched for it. Guess a few hours Goggling/Yahooing or other search might turn up that. Might be in one of the auto thief books I have but don't recall it off hand
As far as all engine sizes and transmissions (specific ones were done earlier as indicated) believe the text above shows 1968. federal rules often take place at the first of the year though suppliers often start the process earlier so that they can be up to speed and all the hickups worked out so they are in compliance. As for our cars of focus Not sure if it was day #1 for 68 production but you could start a thread and we could see how early (by comparing VIN stamped blocks or transmissions) to confirm.

I couldn't find anywhere that comes right out and states "ye olde engine and trans shall henceforth be stamped with thine VIN", the gist of it seems to be that the manufacturer has to be able to prove they / their components are in compliance with the Safety Act, and be able to issue recalls on components. I would imagine this somehow boiled down to requiring VIN stamps on engine and trans.
