I am in the process of rebuilding/retoring my stock Ford distributor and am finding the casting has a dark redish/brown spray in one location on the outside of the housing and its finish seem quite permanent, not sure why it would have been don't after it left the factory. Did Ford put any spray type lube, coating, paint marking on the outside of the distributor housing? See attached photo

I for one have not seen a mark exactly like that from the factory. Most likely something that has happened some time in the 50 years /half a century since it left the factory. ;)

How and/or what was used to lubricate the shaft on these distributors?
-
A few drops of oil on the centrifugal advance mechanism. A few drops of oil on the felt that rides on the points cam. Engine oil splashes around the distributor lower shaft and bushing when the car is running.

Okay, I have completely disassembled the distributor, so I was thinking assembly lube on the shaft inside the distributor, surprised enough oil gets passed the retaining collar to lube it after startup, thank you for the info.
